The DSCA Environment
• In DSCA, there is no battlefield…
• The enemy is often unassailable (i.e. the weather)
• Our level of support is highly constrained by law
• We are not the lead, but in support of our partners
• Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
• National Guard Bureau (NGB)
• NORTHCOM Components
• Army North (ARNORTH) – DSCA proponent
• Air Forces North (AFNORTH) – IAA proponent
• Fleet Forces Command
• JTF-Civil Support
• Defense Coordination Officers & Elements (DCOs & DCEs)
• State Joint Operations Centers
• National Geospatial Agency (NGA)
We must support our mission partners “out of the gate”

3. The Problem
• Our Civilian partners do not have quick and simple
access to DoD networks and data.
• There are no CAC cards within the civilian network
• DoD still thinks in a stovepipe Paradigm
• What are we really protecting?
• We have to share our data with them, yet we don’t
operate within their environment
3
4. The Solution
• Instead of using DoD systems and requiring our
partners to come to us for data, cache our data
within the Internet and use the tools available
within the Web 2.0 environment to collaborate.
• I will explain…
4
5. Web 2.0 Architecture Constructs
• “Net-centric” services
• Making available relevant, accurate information in a
timely manner to Internet users
• Scalable
• Designed to handle concurrent users
simultaneously
• Interoperability based on open IT standards
• Industry standards, e.g. HTTP, SOAP, XML
• Open standards, e.g. OGC - WMS, WFS, etc
• Defacto commercial standards, e.g. KML, Shapefiles
5
6. A Few Web 2.0 Tools
• •
Twitter RSS
• •
Linkedin Skype
• •
Facebook iGoogle
• •
Google Docs Google Maps
• •
Microsoft Live Wikis
• •
Blogger Mashups
• •
Twitpic Tripit
These are all “cloud computing” constructs
6
7. Applying the Tools
• Twitter
• Send text messages to the cloud and have it distributed to
those who follow you
• Receive all messages for those you follow
• LinkedIn
• Professional networking (personal resume)
• Discover SMEs for other organizations
• Auto-add your contacts and searches for linkages
• Post trip itinerary
• Facebook
• Use Twitter to post to Organizational Facebook Page
• Acts as a running log for events
• Links all others with Facebook accounts
7
8. Applying the Tools (cont.)
• Google Docs
• Add and collaborate on-line documents
• TripIt
• Post your travel details (pdf from SATO) to LinkedIn and
other sites
• Twitpics
• Take a picture and send it to Twitpics – auto posts to Twitter
and Facebook
• iGoogle
• Email/Calendar/Chat
• Google Docs
• Facebook
• Twitter
• SAGE Data that can be shared in Google Maps
• Skype
• Instant VTC capability 8
9. Integrating Situational Awareness
• USNORTHCOM uses its DOD based communications
architecture to collate all FFT devices and provide
the FFT service through SAGE
• Also provides overlays of force laydown
• We use Web Services based on common standards
to share
• Tools are not the focus – data is…
• Data available via KML to “mashup” in Google Maps
via the web or through a cell phone
