ABSTRACT: This talk introduces some of the problematics about International Development Aid going through the highlights of my work experience as ICT manager in an international development project in Sierra Leone. Moreover, it will give different perspectives about Africa compared to the one usually portrayed by media, highlighting some success stories of African innovations and discussing the role of technology in tackling some of the future African continent’s challenges. BIO: Luca Cimonetti worked as software engineer in several European countries: Austria, Netherlands and France. Following my interest for ICT4D, I recently worked as ICT manager in an international development project in Sierra Leone with the aim of building a national emergency medical service. As a result of continuous economic growth, urbanization and industrialization there has been increase in volume and types of solid and hazardous waste particularly in developing countries. Many Nigeria cities and towns are facing problems of effective collection of garbage from homes and streets the situation that make Nigerians to be permanently accustomed to dirt environment. Based on this background, the paper examines the waste conditions and disposal as well as the influence on the environment in term of cleanliness at Ado Ekiti in Nigeria using both primary and secondary sources of data collection which were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis. The evidence of the result can be clearly seen every day by way of indiscriminate discharge of garbage into drains and at times on the highways due to ineffective ways of waste management in the town. The paper therefore recommends integrate waste management system as an option towards a clean city.

The study analyzed the impact of urban planning on reducing household poverty in Uganda. It found that both negative and positive factors significantly influence household poverty. The study also identified five key factors that contribute to household poverty: social services, research and development, employment, and investment. The findings suggest that urban planners should align their policies with government policies when allocating resources to reduce poverty caused by unplanned urbanization. The study recommends that urban planners work to improve the quality of life for households in Uganda

Presentation at the first African Urban Matters: Cities of the Future event in Cape Town, South Africa from 14-15 November 2013 which was held in collaboration with African Ideas. According to UN-HABITAT, the population in some cities will increase by almost 85% over the next 10 years. This startling fact means that a multitude of problems are arising due to rapid urbanisation spiralling. As Africa becomes increasingly urbanized with thousands of people flocking to all major hubs - where the urban population was about 36% in 2010, it is projected to increase to 50% and 60% by 2030 and 2050 respectively - and the continent’s rapidly growing middle-class is insisting upon more of a saying how their cities are run, it is becoming crucial to relook models of engagement with citizens and their urban planning methodologies and efficiencies. Local government organisations, which are already under incredible pressure are facing increasing challenges in providing basic services, let alone the requirements of the future. Relooking these models is also an opportunity to innovate and promote both transparency and efficiencies. SAP designed its global Urban Matters program in response to these challenges, with the goal to improve people's lives. The program comprises a collection of SAP ICT solutions specifically aimed at helping government organisations of all sizes simply run better. During this event being hosted in the beautiful Mother City of Cape Town, South Africa, expect to be involved in thought-provoking sessions and discussions with global and local urban development experts and best-in-class cities, to find out how ICT solutions have helped them to create significantly better cities.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
