Baylor women, Kentucky meet in rematch of 4-OT thriller
1. Baylor women, Kentucky meet in rematch of 4-OT thriller
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - When Baylor met Kentucky in December, it was a gauge to see where the
young Lady Bears stood.
Both teams were ranked in the top 10, but that cold night on a neutral court at ATT Stadium in
Arlington was the first time most of Baylor's roster played on that kind of stage.
What coach Kim Mulkey and the Lady Bears got out of that game was to find out just how good they
could be. Baylor and Kentucky matched each other basket for basket and played to a stalemate
through three overtimes before the Wildcats won 133-130 in quadruple overtime.
"When I think about the game, I think we gave up a lot of points," Lady Bears senior point guard
Odyssey Sims said. "It was a great game, but I don't think we defended them as well as we should
have in terms of dribble penetration.."
2. 2 teams have evolved
The teams meet again Saturday with much more on the line this time. The winner of the Sweet 16
showdown in the Midwest Regional moves on to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament.
While Mulkey concedes the teams' first meeting was a game for the ages - it was the highest-scoring
women's game of all time, and 11 players fouled out - it has no bearing on the rematch.
"I think the only thing you can take from that game is knowing what the strengths and weaknesses
of the individual players are," Mulkey said. "Both teams have changed a lot. Kentucky is playing
more zone defense. We're not playing more zone defense, but our freshmen are certainly much
better now. They're bigger contributors for us on both ends of the floor than they were in that
game."
Baylor (31-4) has grown since that first meeting, which was dominated by the guards, Sims scored
47 points before fouling out in the first overtime, while the Wildcats' Jennifer O'Neill had 43.
"We weren't planning to go at each other," Sims said. "I didn't realize how many points I had. We
just gave it to who was scoring. At the time we were trading buckets, I was just trying to score as
much as I could and trying to get my team the (win)."
Chance at redemption
Forward Nina Davis, the Big 12 freshman of the year and the outstanding player in the league
tournament, said the Lady Bears have improved so much since early December that they were
looking at the film of the Kentucky game and laughing at the mistakes they made.
3. "One of the things we need to do is rebound," Davis said. "They have two very physical post players,
so we're going to have to keep them off the boards. We have to stop their transition points. We have
to stop their dribble penetration and not give them wide-open looks. If we do those things, I feel it
will pretty much go our way."
