This chapter discusses tobacco use in the United States. It notes that over 70 million Americans currently smoke, including 13.6 million college students. Smoking rates vary according to gender, age, ethnicity, and education level. Tobacco use leads to numerous health issues, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and COPD. Environmental tobacco smoke also negatively impacts nonsmokers' health. While it can be difficult, quitting smoking provides significant health benefits. A variety of resources are available to help individuals quit tobacco use.
