2. Information It is a throwing sport. People first started to play it in the 1870s. It was played in pubs first with a board made of wood, normally elm. But then it got known, and people started to play it in grand halls with a crowd of hundreds of people drinking, smoking and having fun. What may surprise you is the fact that darts is the most played sport in the world with well over 80.000 professional players making it more popular than football, basket ball and tennis. Also the premier league darts often plays host to crowds of well over 20.000.
3. Other little things While playing, the darters used to be allowed to smoke, drink wine and beer and other alcohols. But now only the crowd can drink, but again, they can’t smoke.
4. Some basic rules You have three darts each to throw; at the end of throwing the three you count up, you score and take it away from 501. The first to 0 wins that leg, the first to three legs wins that set, and the game must end with a double or the bull’s eye.
5. The Power The Power is my favourite darter. His name is Phil Taylor, his nickname is Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor. He has won the world championship 15 times in 20 years. He is the best player of all time, he wins money, trophies, certificates and medals. He is brilliant. The sport has made him a multi millionaire because he has earned well over £2 million in prize money. He was the first darter to do a 9 dart finish on live TV.
6. Whitlock Simon Whitlock is another of my favourite darters as well, although he is not as good as Taylor. He is Australian, he played The Power in the finals of the world championship and gave him a very hard match.
9. The Power with 2 of his many trophies World Match Play 2010 World Champion
10. Tools of the trade The dart board is made of pressed sisal hair laid on a wooden back board and with a metal frame on the front to define the segments and numbers. The dart consists of three parts as follows, the shaft, the stem and the flight.
