Word sense disambiguation is an essential, yet a very difficult task in natural language processing. While several other NLP tasks, such as POS tagging, can provide more than fairly good results (highly accurate, with almost 100% rate of successfully labeled words), disambiguation is far from achieving such performances. However, we will demonstrate the need of word sense disambiguation in computing the lexical chains on a special kind of text (chats) using a WordNet-based approach. In addition, we will try to identify the bottlenecks (mostly in respect to accuracy) in such an approach and provide possible improvements

Classification is paramount for an optimal processing of tweets, albeit performance of classifiers is hindered by the need of large sets of training data to encompass the diversity of con- tents one can find on Twitter. In this paper, Arkaitz Zubiaga and Heng Ji introduces an inexpensive way of labeling large sets of tweets, which can be easily regenerated or updated when needed. We use human-edited web page directories to infer categories from URLs contained in tweets. By experimenting with a large set of more than 5 million tweets categorized accordingly, we show that our proposed model for tweet classification can achieve 82% in accuracy, performing only 12.2% worse than for web page classification. Rabin Karp algorithm is a search algorithm that searches for a substring pattern in a text using hashing. It is beneficial for matching words with many patterns. One of the practical applications of Rabin Karp's algorithm is in the detection of plagiarism. Michael O. Rabin and Richard M. Karp invented the algorithm. This algorithm performs string search by using a hash function. A hash function is the values that are compared between two documents to determine the level of similarity of the document. Rabin-Karp algorithm is not very good for single pattern text search. This algorithm is perfect for multiple pattern search. The Levenshtein algorithm can be used to replace the hash calculation on the Rabin-Karp algorithm. The hash calculation on Rabin-Karp only counts the number of hashes that have the same value in both documents. Using the Levenshtein algorithm, the calculation of the hash distance in both documents will result in better accuracy.

Search logs contain examples of frequently occurring patterns of user reformulations of queries. Intuitively, the reformulation "san francisco" → "san francisco 49ers" is semantically similar to "detroit" →"detroit lions". Likewise, "london"→"things to do in london" and "new york"→"new york tourist attractions" can also be considered similar transitions in intent. The reformulation "movies" → "new movies" and "york" → "new york", however, are clearly different despite the lexical similarities in the two reformulations. In this paper, we study the distributed representation of queries learnt by deep neural network models, such as the Convolutional Latent Semantic Model, and show that they can be used to represent query reformulations as vectors. These reformulation vectors exhibit favourable properties such as mapping semantically and syntactically similar query changes closer in the embedding space. Our work is motivated by the success of continuous space language models in capturing relationships between words and their meanings using offset vectors. We demonstrate a way to extend the same intuition to represent query reformulations. Furthermore, we show that the distributed representations of queries and reformulations are both useful for modelling session context for query prediction tasks, such as for query auto-completion (QAC) ranking. Our empirical study demonstrates that short-term (session) history context features based on these two representations improves the mean reciprocal rank (MRR) for the QAC ranking task by more than 10% over a supervised ranker baseline. Our results also show that by using features based on both these representations together we achieve a better performance, than either of them individually. Paper accepted on CSCW'17 by Chunyang Chen. Community edits to questions and answers (called post edits) plays an important role in improving content quality in Stack Overflow. Our study of post edits in Stack Overflow shows that a large number of edits are about formatting, grammar and spelling. These post edits usually involve small-scale sentence edits and our survey of trusted contributors suggests that most of them care much or very much about such small sentence edits. To assist users in making small sentence edits, we develop an edit-assistance tool for identifying minor textual issues in posts and recommending sentence edits for correction. We formulate the sentence editing task as a machine translation problem, in which an original sentence is “translated” into an edited sentence. Our tool implements a character-level Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) encoder-decoder model, trained with about 6.8 millions original-edited sentence pairs from Stack Overflow post edits. We evaluate our edit assistance tool using a large-scale archival post edits, a field study of assisting a novice post editor, and a survey of trusted contributors. Our evaluation demonstrates the feasibility of training a deep learning model with post edits by the community and then using the trained model to assist post editing for the community.

Text categorization, especially short text categorization, is a difficult and challenging task since the text data is sparse and multidimensional. In traditional text classification methods, document texts are represented with “Bag of Words (BOW)” text representation schema, which is based on word co-occurrence and has many limitations. In this paper, we mapped document texts to Wikipedia concepts and used the Wikipedia-concept-based document representation method to take the place of traditional BOW model for text classification. In order to overcome the weakness of ignoring the semantic relationships among terms in document representation model and utilize rich semantic knowledge in Wikipedia, we constructed a semantic matrix to enrich Wikipedia-concept-based document representation. Experimental evaluation on five real datasets of long and short text shows that our approach outperforms the traditional BOW method.

In this paper, we introduce Linkator, an application architecture that exploits semantic annotations for automatically adding links to previously generated web pages. Linkator provides a mechanism for dereferencing these semantic annotations with what it calls semantic links. Automatically adding links to web pages improves the users’ navigation. It connects the visited page with external sources of information that the user can be interested in, but that were not identified as such during the web page design phase. The process of auto-linking encompasses: finding the terms to be linked and finding the destination of the link. Linkator delegates the first stage to external semantic annotation tools and it concentrates on the process of finding a relevant resource to link to. In this paper, a use case is presented that shows how this mechanism can support knowledge workers in finding publications during their navigation on the web.
