Yawing and Furling
   Mechanisms

                 Maree
What is it? Why is this mechanism needed?
• Wind constantly changes direction
•
• Conventional wind turbines are not omni-direction, so as wind changes,
so must the direction the rotor faces to keep it in the wind
• Having the rotor at right-angles to the wind direction maximises the
energy captured by the rotor and therefore the energy output of the WTG
• Turning the rotor into the wind is called yawing
• A WTG is said to have yaw error if rotor is not perpendicular to the wind
  direction

  (VAWTs) (HAWTs)

• Omni-directional • Need to yaw as wind changes
• Always facing the wind direction
• No yaw mechanism

                      mechanical yaw system
Pre 1745 Dutch windmills used quot;Miller yawquot;... yaw powered
by a miller who monitored the wind all day and turned the mill
around to face the wind with a tail pole, crank or capstan
wheel. This was a labourious task.

                                     Tower mill
              Post mill
Much to the embarrassment of millwrights everywhere, it
took a blacksmith to invent the Fantail (or rosette) in 1745.

                             the miller from the job.

                                               An embarrassed millwright

WTGs (and wind pumps) up to 10 m diameter may be yawed
into the wind in a passive way using Tail Vanes.

They are deceptively simple, often requiring engineering to
get them just right.
Downwind WTGs can use a passive yawing technique called
Coning. The coning allows the rotor to act as its own tail
vane. The angle of coning can range between 1-2° for heavy
blades and 8-10° for lightweight blades.
For WTGs more than 10 metres in diameter using a tail vane is no longer
feasible as the tail vane would need to be too large.

Instead, electronic or hydraulic motors are used to turn the rotor into the wind
(active yaw). These are called yaw drives and there is often more than one
drive to share the load of turning the nacelle on the tower.
The WTG controller checks the position of wind vane several times a second
and activates yaw drives when necessary.

Typically yaw drives are accompanied by yaw brakes, and/or permanent
friction brakes, that are only released during yaw movement to reduce
backlash which can damage gear teeth.

Cables inside the tower twist as nacelle yaws. To ensure they don't become
too twisted, a cable twist counter tells controller to unwind - often after five
full revolutions (and pull switch activated if this fails).

Cable twist counter and pull switch

            nacelle
Yaw damper
• turbulent or gusty winds can make a turbine yaw unwieldy
•
• this cuts performance as a yawing turbine isn't producing maximum
  power
• Yaw damper sometimes used to reduce the rate of yaw
Summary
• WTGs need to be yawed into the wind as it changes direction to capture
•
  the most energy
• VAWTs are omni-directional so no yaw mechanism required
• HAWT yaw mechanisms
o Miller driven capstan wheels as seen on 18th C. Dutch windmills
o Fantails on Dutch windmills and a small number of other windmills
o Tail vanes on household sized WTGs (up to 10m diam), wind pumps
   o Coning on downwind turbines
o Yaw drives on medium to large sized WTGs
 controller polls wind vane many times a second
 yaw brakes and permanent friction brakes to protect gears
 cable twist counter and pull switch
• Yaw damper sometimes used to reduce the rate of yaw in turbulent winds
(turbulent or gusty winds can make a turbine yaw unwieldy which cuts
  performance)
What is it? Why is a mechanism needed?
• Furling is turning the rotor out of the wind
•
• Decreasing frontal area of the rotor intercepting the wind
• It is needed for
o over-speed protection (turbine operating outside its safe range)
    o maintenance shut down
o protecting WTG components in strong winds
o reducing the cost of tower and rotor (robustness costs $)
o reducing wear and tear, only operating in winds feasible to capture
o managing power output as wind speed increases
HAWTs vs VAWTs
Low rotor speed and robust construction
• small wind turbines <= 1 m diam.
• yacht and marine WTGs, designed to survive harsh environments with
  very strong construction
• no furling mechanism except a hole in tail vane for manual furl with a
pole hook used when maintaining or when not in use.

                                    Marlec Rutland (above)

                                    Ampair (left)
Halladay Rosette / umbrella mill (water pump)
 • when unfurled it looks like a
   typical water pump windmill
 • in high winds, automatically
   opens segmented rotor into a
   hollow cylinder letting wind
   pass through
 • each segment consisted of
   several blades mounted on a
   shaft allowing segment to
   swing into/out of wind
 • flip action balanced by
   adjustable counterweights
Horizontal furling
• hinge between tail vane and rotor allowed rotor to furl towards the tail,
thus decreasing frontal area capturing wind
• rotor disk takes shape of a narrower and narrower ellipse as it reduces
  the area exposed to wind
• offsetting the axis of rotor slightly from axis of yaw allows self-furl in high
winds, or (adjustable) spring tension or counterweights are used to set
furl speed. Some use gravity (weight of tail) rather than springs to return.
• many small, household sized WTGs use this technique
Vertical furling
• tip the rotor out of the wind like a helicopter, and as wind subsides rock
•
  back towards horizontal
• springs or counterweights to control furl speed
• gusty winds can cause it to rock back and forth jarring blades and main
shaft so dampening is required (rubber pad, shock absorber)
• alternatively, rotor + nacelle + tail vane all tip up, however can cause
  rapid yawing around the tower
Coning
• allowing blades to increasingly cone downwind of tower
•
• also involves changing blade pitch
• Musgrove's variable-geometry H-rotor (vertical axis) has blades hinged to
crossarm, tensioned with springs. In high winds, blades approach
  horizontal, thus reducing swept area.
Blade pitch (also used for power regulation)
• controlling the amount of lift the blade produces influences rotor speed
•
• by feathering (turning towards parallel to wind direction, 90° pitch)
• 1930s flyball/Watt governor for passive pitching, weights would feather
all three blades at high wind speeds
• blade-actuated governor uses weight of blades as they slide out along
blade shaft away from the hub, to simultaneously feather blades, with
  springs
• modern wind turbines with pitch control use hydraulics
Aerodynamic Stall
• passive stall - blade aerodynamically designed to ensure that the
•
moment the wind speed becomes too high, it creates turbulence on the
side of the rotor blade which is not facing the wind. Passive stall avoids
moving parts in rotor but it is requires complex aerodynamic design
• active stall (1 MW and up) - very much like pitch controlled WTGs except
as it reaches cutout speed, machine pitches blades in opposite direction
to pitch control (feather) - rather it makes the blades go into deeper stall
to waste excess energy. Operated using hydraulics or electric stepper
  motors.
Mechanical brakes
• overspeed protection rather than 'furling' as such
• typically applied to the high speed shaft as these brakes can be smaller,
•
less expensive however transmission failure means brakes won't stop
rotor (gearbox failure more likely than main shaft failure)
• brakes applied mechanically, electronically or hydraulically
• operate in a fail-safe manner - need power to take brakes off (springs or
  hydraulic reservoir)
• always need an aerodynamic braking mechanism backup in case of
  brake failure
• drum brake or disk brake
• used to hold the turbine at rest for maintenance.
• mechanical brakes are usually applied only after blade furling have
reduced the turbine speed, as the mechanical brakes would wear quickly
if used to stop the turbine from full speed.
Aerodynamic brakes
• tip brakes - activated by centrifugal force along a grooved shaft, deploy a
•
flat plate transverse to the direction of travel (hydraulics bring it back)
• pitchable tips - similar activation except tip twists instead of a flap
• spoilers/ailerons - as most of power in wind is captured by outer third of
rotor, can limit rotor speed by changing pitch of part of the blade only
(changes shape of aerofoil, to destroy its effectiveness)
Summary
• furling is taking rotor out of wind for overspeed protection or to stop rotor
•
  during servicing
• low rotor speed and rugged construction used on yachts
• horizontal furling (tail vane) and vertical furling (helicopter)
• Halladay's Umbrella mill opened into a hollow cylinder
• coning used for downwind HAWTs and Musgrove's VAWT
• blade design for static stall at cut-out speed
• variable blade pitch (and stall) usually requires active components and
complicated control to manage lift and drag as WTG reaches cut-out
  speed
• mechanical brakes used in combination with aerodynamic (pitch or stall)
mechanisms on high or low speed shaft in nacelle
Household-sized (small) WTG
• require simplicity and ruggedness, high reliability
• upwind rotor, tail vane passive yaw
• blades design to begin to stall near cut-out speed
• tail vane furl
• most lack a mechanical brake

WTG Yawing And Furling Mechanisms

  • 1. WTG Yawing and Furling Mechanisms Maree
  • 2. What is it? Why is this mechanism needed? • Wind constantly changes direction • • Conventional wind turbines are not omni-direction, so as wind changes, so must the direction the rotor faces to keep it in the wind • Having the rotor at right-angles to the wind direction maximises the energy captured by the rotor and therefore the energy output of the WTG • Turning the rotor into the wind is called yawing • A WTG is said to have yaw error if rotor is not perpendicular to the wind direction
  • 3. Vertical Axis Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines vs Wind Turbines (VAWTs) (HAWTs) • Omni-directional • Need to yaw as wind changes • Always facing the wind direction • No yaw mechanism
  • 4. HAWT yawing technique categories or • wind used to rotate the • electronic or hydraulic nacelle and rotor into the motors move the wind nacelle to yaw the rotor into the wind Perhaps sitting in the middle... • wind used to power a mechanical yaw system
  • 5. Pre 1745 Dutch windmills used quot;Miller yawquot;... yaw powered by a miller who monitored the wind all day and turned the mill around to face the wind with a tail pole, crank or capstan wheel. This was a labourious task. Tower mill Post mill
  • 6. Much to the embarrassment of millwrights everywhere, it took a blacksmith to invent the Fantail (or rosette) in 1745.
  • 7. ... the axillary rotor, set at right angles to the sails, harnesses the crosswind to turn the cap of the windmill to face the wind, automatically... freeing the miller from the job. Powered by the wind? Well I never... An embarrassed millwright Edmund Lee, a millers friend, the blacksmith who invented the fantail
  • 8. WTGs (and wind pumps) up to 10 m diameter may be yawed into the wind in a passive way using Tail Vanes. They are deceptively simple, often requiring engineering to get them just right.
  • 9. Downwind WTGs can use a passive yawing technique called Coning. The coning allows the rotor to act as its own tail vane. The angle of coning can range between 1-2° for heavy blades and 8-10° for lightweight blades.
  • 10. For WTGs more than 10 metres in diameter using a tail vane is no longer feasible as the tail vane would need to be too large. Instead, electronic or hydraulic motors are used to turn the rotor into the wind (active yaw). These are called yaw drives and there is often more than one drive to share the load of turning the nacelle on the tower.
  • 11. The WTG controller checks the position of wind vane several times a second and activates yaw drives when necessary. Typically yaw drives are accompanied by yaw brakes, and/or permanent friction brakes, that are only released during yaw movement to reduce backlash which can damage gear teeth. Cables inside the tower twist as nacelle yaws. To ensure they don't become too twisted, a cable twist counter tells controller to unwind - often after five full revolutions (and pull switch activated if this fails). Cable twist counter and pull switch Wind vane on the back of Several yaw drives nacelle
  • 12. Yaw damper • turbulent or gusty winds can make a turbine yaw unwieldy • • this cuts performance as a yawing turbine isn't producing maximum power • Yaw damper sometimes used to reduce the rate of yaw
  • 13. Summary • WTGs need to be yawed into the wind as it changes direction to capture • the most energy • VAWTs are omni-directional so no yaw mechanism required • HAWT yaw mechanisms o Miller driven capstan wheels as seen on 18th C. Dutch windmills o Fantails on Dutch windmills and a small number of other windmills o Tail vanes on household sized WTGs (up to 10m diam), wind pumps o Coning on downwind turbines o Yaw drives on medium to large sized WTGs  controller polls wind vane many times a second  yaw brakes and permanent friction brakes to protect gears  cable twist counter and pull switch • Yaw damper sometimes used to reduce the rate of yaw in turbulent winds (turbulent or gusty winds can make a turbine yaw unwieldy which cuts performance)
  • 14. What is it? Why is a mechanism needed? • Furling is turning the rotor out of the wind • • Decreasing frontal area of the rotor intercepting the wind • It is needed for o over-speed protection (turbine operating outside its safe range) o maintenance shut down o protecting WTG components in strong winds o reducing the cost of tower and rotor (robustness costs $) o reducing wear and tear, only operating in winds feasible to capture o managing power output as wind speed increases
  • 16. Low rotor speed and robust construction • small wind turbines <= 1 m diam. • yacht and marine WTGs, designed to survive harsh environments with very strong construction • no furling mechanism except a hole in tail vane for manual furl with a pole hook used when maintaining or when not in use. Marlec Rutland (above) Ampair (left)
  • 17. Halladay Rosette / umbrella mill (water pump) • when unfurled it looks like a typical water pump windmill • in high winds, automatically opens segmented rotor into a hollow cylinder letting wind pass through • each segment consisted of several blades mounted on a shaft allowing segment to swing into/out of wind • flip action balanced by adjustable counterweights
  • 18. Horizontal furling • hinge between tail vane and rotor allowed rotor to furl towards the tail, thus decreasing frontal area capturing wind • rotor disk takes shape of a narrower and narrower ellipse as it reduces the area exposed to wind • offsetting the axis of rotor slightly from axis of yaw allows self-furl in high winds, or (adjustable) spring tension or counterweights are used to set furl speed. Some use gravity (weight of tail) rather than springs to return. • many small, household sized WTGs use this technique
  • 19. Vertical furling • tip the rotor out of the wind like a helicopter, and as wind subsides rock • back towards horizontal • springs or counterweights to control furl speed • gusty winds can cause it to rock back and forth jarring blades and main shaft so dampening is required (rubber pad, shock absorber) • alternatively, rotor + nacelle + tail vane all tip up, however can cause rapid yawing around the tower
  • 20. Coning • allowing blades to increasingly cone downwind of tower • • also involves changing blade pitch • Musgrove's variable-geometry H-rotor (vertical axis) has blades hinged to crossarm, tensioned with springs. In high winds, blades approach horizontal, thus reducing swept area.
  • 21. Blade pitch (also used for power regulation) • controlling the amount of lift the blade produces influences rotor speed • • by feathering (turning towards parallel to wind direction, 90° pitch) • 1930s flyball/Watt governor for passive pitching, weights would feather all three blades at high wind speeds • blade-actuated governor uses weight of blades as they slide out along blade shaft away from the hub, to simultaneously feather blades, with springs • modern wind turbines with pitch control use hydraulics
  • 22. Aerodynamic Stall • passive stall - blade aerodynamically designed to ensure that the • moment the wind speed becomes too high, it creates turbulence on the side of the rotor blade which is not facing the wind. Passive stall avoids moving parts in rotor but it is requires complex aerodynamic design • active stall (1 MW and up) - very much like pitch controlled WTGs except as it reaches cutout speed, machine pitches blades in opposite direction to pitch control (feather) - rather it makes the blades go into deeper stall to waste excess energy. Operated using hydraulics or electric stepper motors.
  • 23. Mechanical brakes • overspeed protection rather than 'furling' as such • typically applied to the high speed shaft as these brakes can be smaller, • less expensive however transmission failure means brakes won't stop rotor (gearbox failure more likely than main shaft failure) • brakes applied mechanically, electronically or hydraulically • operate in a fail-safe manner - need power to take brakes off (springs or hydraulic reservoir) • always need an aerodynamic braking mechanism backup in case of brake failure • drum brake or disk brake • used to hold the turbine at rest for maintenance. • mechanical brakes are usually applied only after blade furling have reduced the turbine speed, as the mechanical brakes would wear quickly if used to stop the turbine from full speed.
  • 24. Aerodynamic brakes • tip brakes - activated by centrifugal force along a grooved shaft, deploy a • flat plate transverse to the direction of travel (hydraulics bring it back) • pitchable tips - similar activation except tip twists instead of a flap • spoilers/ailerons - as most of power in wind is captured by outer third of rotor, can limit rotor speed by changing pitch of part of the blade only (changes shape of aerofoil, to destroy its effectiveness)
  • 25. Summary • furling is taking rotor out of wind for overspeed protection or to stop rotor • during servicing • low rotor speed and rugged construction used on yachts • horizontal furling (tail vane) and vertical furling (helicopter) • Halladay's Umbrella mill opened into a hollow cylinder • coning used for downwind HAWTs and Musgrove's VAWT • blade design for static stall at cut-out speed • variable blade pitch (and stall) usually requires active components and complicated control to manage lift and drag as WTG reaches cut-out speed • mechanical brakes used in combination with aerodynamic (pitch or stall) mechanisms on high or low speed shaft in nacelle
  • 26. Household-sized (small) WTG • require simplicity and ruggedness, high reliability • upwind rotor, tail vane passive yaw • blades design to begin to stall near cut-out speed • tail vane furl • most lack a mechanical brake Rutland Furlmatic 1803 Westwind 3 kW 48V
  • 27. Medium-large sized WTG • yaw drives • • hydraulic variable pitch blades • mechanical disc brake on high speed shaft • see Vestas V52-850kW Product Brochure
