2. What is a Hard Drive?
A HDD is a device for storing and retrieving
digital information, primarily computer data.
3. Board
The Electronics control the read & Write
mechanism and the motor the spins the
platters.
The Electronis also assemble the magnetic
domains on the drive into bytes for reading and
then tern them into MD’s (Writing).
4. HDD: Under The Board
There are connections for the motor that spins
the platters, there are also highly-filtered vent
hole to let air pressures equalize.
The platters spin at 3,600 or 7,200 rpm when it
is operating.
The arm holds the read/write heads. The arm is
able to move the heads from the hub to the
edge of the drive. A trypical HDD can do this
upto 50 times/s
6. HDD: Data Storage
Data is store on the surface of a
platter in ‘Sectors’ and ‘Tracks.’
Trachs in yellow, sector in blue.
A sector contains a fixed number of bytes.
Low-level formatting allows the drive to
establish tracks and sectors on the platter.
