TOGI : Personalisedprogramme:Addressing Prior knowledgeKnowing the learner – having an interest in your Pasifika learners – where do you come from? What are your interests?Believing in them – having the Pasifika learner know that you yourself believe in them. Encourage, inspire them – talk about your education journey through the NZ education systemWorking collaboratively – work together and sharing knowledge with Pasifika learners. We as Pasifika learners like to work in groups its really all about family - we do things together to support one another.Catering for the language needs of students – this comes with knowing your learner. Are they from the Islands? New Zealand born islanders? Modelling – showing them how to deconstruct texts as a whole class and then work in groups and then maybe they will feel confortable to give it a go on their own which will take TIME and TIME is very very important. Give them the time and space to give things a go.Sharing cultural experiences – Sharing your cultural experiences – Pasifika learners like to know where you come from, they like to make connections with you and when the ‘sharing’ happens with the cultural experiences you build that strong relationships with the learnersPasifika values – Pasifka values are a part of our cultural heritage and upbringing. We have connections and ties with Respect, Service, Leadership, Spirituality, Belonging, Family, Love, Inclusion, Reciprocal relationships.
TOGIUsing the knowledge and strengths of Pasifika learners I took these and looked for Pasifika literature. Using these Pasifika authors and reading their poems, the learners connected with these poems because they had prior knowledge of this within their own family, church and community.
