In our surroundings we can see different types
of things, places, animal, birds, etc. each of
these objects have different names.
Eg.Crow, pencil, Alappuzha etc
 We had already learnt about such type
of things, animals, birds etc to call a
name in grammar.
 Do you remember that ?
 Eg: name of a person, place,animal,
things, etc are called -------------------------
---
 Correct answer : Noun
Great! It is easy now .Is n’t it?
 Now we know that names of things, places ,
animals etc called nouns
 Sita sings well
 Sita dances well
 Here the naming word is ‘Sita’. It is the noun in
two sentences .
Here, Sita is repeated in these two sentences.
In such cases we can use other words instead
of Sita (noun).
Thus avoiding repetition of nouns we can use
other words, called pronouns
 So again we may discuss the example
 Sita sings well.
 Sita dances well.
 Instead of Sita we use ‘She’
 So -----------is the pronoun for Sita.
 Correct answer : Sita , ‘She’ is the pronoun
 It is very easy. isn’t it ?
 So pronouns are words that can be used in
place of nouns and noun expressions
 ‘Pro’ means – instead
 So pronoun is a word used instead of a noun
 Eg: Kallu travels a lot .Kallu loves
travelling.
 Kallu travels a lot. She loves travelling.
 So she is ………….
 Correct answer : Pronoun
 Very good ! so pronouns are very easy to
identify in a sentence.
 Then we will discuss more about ‘Pronouns’ .
 Eg: My brother is in Delhi . My brother
will come home tomorrow
 My brother is in Delhi. He will come
home tomorrow
 Instead of ‘My brother’, here we used “he”.
 So he is …………
 Correct answer : Pronoun
 Instead of ‘My brother’ we used another word
‘He’(Pronoun).
 Here, Sita - she
 My brother - he
 These two are Pronouns in those sentences
 Similarly name of other things have pronouns.
 Let us discuss.
 The words I, You, He ,She ,It , We
Him, me, they, her, us & them take the place
of nouns. They are used to refer to nouns.
 Eg. This dress is nice. --------------is bright
red.
 Which pronoun can be used here?
 Correct answer – It ( It is the pronoun)
 Instead of ‘dress’, ‘It’ can be used.
 Excellent! now very easy to identify the
noun and where to use proper pronouns.
 Now we will discuss in detail.
 Pronouns are known as noun substitutes.
 It help to make the sentence look good.
 Kalyani is studying in Class 3. Kalyani
studies well.
 Kalyani is studying in class 3 . ------------------
-studies well.
 Correct Answer: she
 So ‘She’ and ‘Her’ refer to a girl and a women.
Similarly
 ‘He’ and ‘Him’ refer to a boy and a man
 ‘It’ refers to a Place ,an animal, a bird and a
thing .
 I ,She,He,It, Me,Him and Her refer to singular
nouns.
 We, Us, They and Them refer to plural nouns
 You refers to both singular and plural nouns.
 We shall identify correct pronouns for
each noun given below.
 Karishma  She / It
 Ribbon  It / he
 Ramu  He / It
 Bush  She / He / It
 Castle  It / She
 Correct Answers – She, It, He, It, It
 They are the answers
 Wow! All are familiar with correct use of
pronouns
 Are you ready to do more ?
 1.Ammu is a dreamer .----------------often dreams
in class.
 2. Mr. Lal lives in our town but---------------is from
Delhi.
 Correct Answer :- She , He
 Oh! Good.
 Then continue with other uses of pronouns
 I and me refer to the names of the persons
speaking.
 We and us refer to the names of the persons
speaking
 These pronouns are in the first person.
 Eg. My mom and I are relaxing .-------------are
watching T V.
 Correct answer ‘We’
 Fine!
 You refers to the name or names of the
persons we are speaking to. It is used for
both singular and plural.
 It is the second person.
 He , him , She , her, and It refer to the name
of the person about who we are speaking.
 They and them refer to the names of the
persons about who we are speaking.
 All these pronouns are in the third person
Look at the table
First
person
Second
person
Third person
Singular I , me You He,She,It ,Him,
Her
Plural We, Us You They, Them
 Now you know how to use a pronoun. We will
work out few more examples.
1. Paul told Sarah, “ -----like potatoes”
2. Reena bought lots of carrot. ----------loves
carrot juice.
3. Mary and Priya went to the market . ------------
ate ice creams.
4.The birds have come back. --------------- are
making nests in our tree.
5. I will come with--------------.
Correct Answers are

 She
 They
 They
 You
 Great! With this we come to an end of our
lesson.
 Pronouns are words that can be used in
place of nouns and noun expressions.
 ‘Pro’ means instead . So pronouns are used
instead of a noun .They are noun
’substitutes’.
 The words: I, You, He, She, It, We, They,
Me,Him,Her & Them take the place of
nouns .
THANK YOU
