Research design is a plan for studying an empirical question that establishes relationships between variables, demonstrates generalizability, reveals temporal order, and eliminates alternative explanations. There are four major research designs: experimental, quasi-experimental, cross-sectional, and pre-experimental. Experiments allow researchers to control exposure to variables and make causal inferences, while addressing internal validity through random assignment and external validity in generalizing findings.
