Manchester Beacon is part of a UK-wide initiative to inspire a culture change in Universities to engage with the public. The presentation outlines our values, creative approaches, learning and higlights some contributions to our local community and invites people to get involved.

- the importance of leadership. And by this I don’t mean – the importance of having a Vice-Chancellor or a senior manager who is behind this agenda – although this is obviously very important. I mean the importance of people that are involved in public engagement activity recognising that they themselves are leaders. The Manchester Beacon is leading change, it is a cultural change project so each and every one of the researchers who get champion and get involved in the agenda needs to be aware of their leadership role. Strong Leadership Shared visioning to create shared value and identify priorities Staff involvement to raise awareness, ownership and endorsement Encourage & support leadership at all levels Celebrate & communicate success A form of reward and recognition that can demonstrate the benefits and show the institution values PE Peer recognition through networks Drivers External drivers can make a difference – e.g. funders, injustice Intrinsic motivation (values, passion) Small amounts of money can stimulate big changes
- Essentially we have three priorities and five objectives. Priority A: 1. PE is encouraged, valued and supported 2. Change perceptions of universities (and communities) and improve accessibility. Priority 2: 3. Increase the relevance of universities and connectivity with communities 4. Improve the opportunities for sustainable two-way learning. Priority C. 5. Develop deeper partnership working across the beacon partners and with the community
