2. What is WAP ?
 WAP is Refer as Wireless Application
Protocol.
 WAP is an open International Standard for
application layer network communications in a wireless
communication environment.
 WAP allows us to access information over a wireless
network.
 It’s a kind fusion of different technologies.
 It has more power to access and interact with wireless

3. Definition of W@P
 All application loaded onto any wireless system must
follow a specific protocol in order to be used by any
specific machine, the protocol which they follow is
called WAP.

A set of protocol which allow data exchange for mobile
cellular systems
It’s device independent.
It is network independent.
WAP is for handheld device such as mobile phones.
WAP enables the creating of web application for mobile
devices.
 WAP uses the mark-up language WML(not HTML).WML
is defined as an XML 1.0 application.

 WML stands for Wireless Markup Language. it a mark-
up language inherited from HRML, but WML is based on
XML, so it is much stricter than HTML.
 Differs from HTML
• XML was specifically designed for wireless terminals
with a target screen that is only a few lines loan and
about an inch wide.
• XML is case sensitive, and all tags and attributes
should be in lowercase.
• WML doesn’t assume that keyboard or a mouse is
available for user input

 The Basic aim of WAP is to provide a web service like
experience on small portable device – like mobile
phones.
 To enable easy , fast delivery of relevant information and
services to mobile users.

 Intermediary element used to connect two different
types of network. It receives request directly from the
clients as if it actually were the origin server that clients
want to receive the information form. The clients are
usually unaware that they are speaking to the Gateway.

right from their handset.

 WML and WML Script(new language, which is based on
HTML).
 Large choice in mobile phones(most of them support WAP).
 Can be used to download abstract data types(videos etc.)
 supports most wireless networks (like:
CDMA,GSM,PDC, PHS, TDMA etc.)
 Can be built on any operating system.

 Small screens: for web phones, there’s an incredibly
small viewing.
 Speed of access: all devices have slow access.
 Limited availability: wireless web access is irregular in
many areas and entirely unavailable in other areas.
 Lack of user habit: it takes some patience and
overcoming the learning curve to get the hang of it—
connecting, putting in an address, typing. User just
aren’t used to the idea and protocol yet.

14. Type of devices that use WAP
• Handheld digital wireless devices such as mobile
phones , pagers , two-way radios, smart phones and
communication from low-end to high-end.
• Multimedia messaging services(MMS) is a combination
of WAP and SMS
• WAP is the initiative to bring cable internet to wireless
internet

 WAP provides a markup language and a transport
protocol that open the possibilities of the wireless
environment.
 WAP is an enabling technology through gateway
infrastructure deployed in mobile operator’s network.
 WAP is independent of OS that means WAP can be
implemented on any OS.

security level on the condition But users should always
bear in mind that an absolute security is a pure
impossibility
