Open Source Course Management System (CMS),
also known as a Learning Management System (LMS)
or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
Is used as a tool for creating online dynamic web sites and
to manage educational content.
To work, it needs to be installed on a web server, either on
one at a web hosting company.
You are allowed to copy, use and modify Moodle if you agree
to: provide the source to others; not modify or remove the original
license and copyrights, and apply this same license to any derivative

Figure 1 shows the Moodle site at www.moodle.org, where
you will find additional information about developers and
users, as well as links for downloading the application itself.

16. Summary
We are focusing on Moodle because of its rapidly growing
presence; because a global community of professionals and
educators who are very passionate about promoting free
software and improving the online learning experience
supports it.
Moodle will work, but not by itself. If teaching staff are not
given the responsibility for producing content, and if there is
not a “course author or designer” that can work with both
teachers and technicians in creating on-line materials, then
Moodle, or any other LMS, will remain an empty shell - like a
good car but with no driver.
