Socrative creates a student response system using students’ own devices or
a computer.

AASL Standards:
1.1.2 Use prior and background knowledge as context for new learning.
2.1.3 Use strategies to draw conclusions from information and apply
knowledge to curricular areas, real-world situations, and further investigations
3.1.2 Participate and collaborate as members of a social and intellectual
network of learners.
The teacher screen on my iPhone allows me to
control the functions of Socrative without being
in front of my computer or having another
device available.
Students can use their phones (and share them
with other students), a computer, or an
iPad/tablet to respond to your questions and
quizzes.
A student data report can be opened in Excel or
Google Docs.
Just in Time Ideas:
• Use as a method to “take the temperature”
of the room and find out if the students are
  understanding a concept.
• Allow students to predict what it going to
happen in a science experiment or story.
• Have students complete an “exit ticket” so
that you know what they learned and/or
  what questions they still have.
Educreations allows you to turn any iPad or browser into an interactive
whiteboard to record video lessons.

AASL Standards:
3.1.2 Participate and collaborate as members of a social and intellectual
network of learners.
3.2.1 Demonstrate leadership and confidence by presenting ideas to others
in both formal and informal situations.
3.3.4 Create products that apply to authentic real-world contexts.
3.3.5 Contribute to the exchange of ideas within and beyond the learning
community.
Just in Time Ideas:
• Teachers can use to demonstrate
concepts for students who are absent or
  who need additional
  instruction/differentiation.
• Students can create videos as a learning
  product (makerspace concept).
• Use to extend concepts that students are
  currently learning about.
Popplet is a way to gather ideas, thoughts, and resources, as well as collaborate
in real-time with others.

AASL Standards:
1.2.3 Demonstrate creativity by using multiple resources and formats.
1.3.4 Contribute to the exchange of iedas within the learning community.
2.1.2 Organize knowledge so it is useful.
2.1.5 Collaborate with others to exchange ideas, develop new understandings,
make decisions, and solve problems.
3.1.2 Participate and collaborate as members of a social and intellectual network
of learners.
4.3.1 Participate in the social exchange of ideas, both electronicall and in
person.
Just in Time Ideas:
• Use for brainstorming (access prior
  knowledge).
• Have students comment on one another’s
Popplets to create a collaborative (100%
  engagement) culture.
• Have students collect their inquiry
resources on a Popplet (including links,
  pictures, etc).
Khan Academy includes video lessons in math, science, finance and economics,
humanities, and test prep.

AASL Standards:

4.1.1 Read, view, and listen for pleasure and personal growth.
4.2.1 Display curiosity by pursuing interests through multiple resources.
4.2.2 Demonstrate motivation by seeking information to answer personal
questions and interests, trying a variety of formats and genres, and displaying
willingness to go beyond academic requirements.
4.3.2 Recognize that resources are created for a variety of purposes.
4.4.3 Recognize how to focus efforts in personal learning.
Just in Time Ideas:
• Allow kids to practice concepts.
• Differentiate instruction for kids who are
ahead or kids who need further instruction.
• Use as a way to reinforce at home if
students do not have homework for that
evening (my district requires a certain
amount of homework each night, so this
  allows for some flexibility).
Scratch

Scratch from MIT allows students to create interactive stories, games, music, and
art.

AASL Standards:
1.2.3 Demonstrate creativity by using multiple resources and formats.
2.1.5 Collaborate with others to exchange ideas, develop new understandings,
make decisions, and solve problems.
2.2.4 Demonstrate personal productivity by completing products to express
learning.
4.3.3 Seek opportunities for pursuing personal and aesthetic growth.
4.4.1 Identify own areas of interest.
4.4.3 Recognize how to focus efforts in personal learning.
Just in Time Ideas:
• Use for an after school video game
  creation club.
• Turn your library into a makerspace and
allow students to follow their personal
  learning interests (write stories, create
  music, make video games).
• Create products/projects that demonstrate
  critical thinking and mathematical
  concepts.
International Children’s Digital Library

The International Children’s Digital Library (ICDL) is an online library of 4,643
children’s books in 61 languages.

AASL Standards:

4.1.1 Read, view, and listen for pleasure and personal growth.
4.1.2 Read widely and fluently to make connection with self, the world, and previous
reading.
4.2.4 Show an appreciation for literature by electing to read for pleasure and
expressing an interest in various literary genres.
Just in Time Ideas:
• Use with students who are learning a
second language so they can see
  authentic texts.
• Use with students who are learning
English as a resource in their native
  language.
• Use to help students understand diverse
  cultures.
Dipity allows users to create interactive, digital timelines.

AASL Standards:

1.2.3 Demonstrate creativity by using multiple resources and formats.
1.3.1 Respect copyright/intellectual property rights of creators and producers.
1.3.3 Follow ethical and legal guidelines in gathering and using information.
2.1.2 Organize knowledge so that it is useful.
2.1.4 Use technology and other information tools to analyze and organize
information.
3.1.4 Use technology and other information tools to organize and display knowledge
and understanding in ways that others can view, use, and assess.
Just in Time Ideas:
• Create timelines to introduce a
  topic/access background knowledge.
• Help students understand the context of
their learning by placing them in the larger
  history of the time.
• Have students make timelines of their
lives to demonstrate their place in history.
Gapminder can help students gain a view of the world through statistics.

AASL Standards:
1.1.2 Use prior and background knowledge as context for new learning.
1.1.5 Evaluate information found in selected sources on the basis of accuracy,
validity, appropriateness for needs, importance, and social and cultural context.
1.1.6 Read, view, and listen for information presented in any format (e.g., textual,
visual, media, digital) in order to make inferences and gather meaning.
2.2.3 Employ a critical stance in drawing conclusions by demonstrating that the
pattern of evidence leads to a decision or conculsion.
2.3.1 Connect understanding to the real world.
2.3.2 Consider diverse and global perspectives in drawing conclusions.
3.3.3 Use knowledge and information skills and dispositions to engage in public
conversation and debate around issues of common concern.
Just in Time Ideas:
• Use as a visual format to help students
  understand larger world issues.
• This is a goldmine for discussion of how
some countries are thriving and others are
not—use as a jumping off point when
  studying economics and/or politics of
  regions of the world.
QR codes are
  everywhere . . . how
  do I make them?
  What do I do with
  them?
Creating QR codes is
   simple:
1. Choose a QR code
   generator. Examples
   include:
   http://www.qrstuff.co
   m/ or http://www.qr-
   code-maker.com/
   (there are many—
   most all are free)
2. Enter the web
   address that you
   want the code to
   access
3. Create the QR code
   and print it for use
Just in Time Ideas:
• Create QR codes to:
Link to author blogs and/or websites
Link to your library online catalog
Link to your local public library website
Link to student book reviews on book
  displays
Create scavenger hunts
