2. by the end of the lesson,
I am able to…
1) Explain how monsoon winds affects rainfall patterns
2) Describe and identify 3 climatic types
3. 1) Refer to handout from
last week (pg 2)

4. (i) Explain how the monsoon
winds affect the amount of
rainfall received by Thailand in
June and December.
Thailand
5. In June, the Southern Hemisphere
experiences winter while the
Northern Hemisphere experiences
summer.
Thailand
Summer
Winter
This means that the air over Australia
sinks and the air pressure is higher
than the Central Asia.
As the Southeast Monsoon winds
leaves Australia, the Coriolis effect
causes the winds to deflect to the left.
!
As a result, the Southeast Monsoon
winds cross the Indian Ocean as it
moves towards the equator, warming
up and picking up more moisture.
6. As the Southeast monsoon winds
crosses the Equator, the Coriolis
effect cause it to deflect to its right.
Thus, the winds became Southwest
monsoon winds, blowing towards
Thailand.
Thailand
Summer
Winter
As a result, by the time the Southwest
monsoon winds reaches Thailand, the
air is saturated, bringing high rainfall in
June.
7. In December, the Northern
Hemisphere experiences winter while
the Southern Hemisphere experiences
summer.
Thailand
Summer
Winter
This means that the air over Central
Asia sinks and the air pressure is
higher than Australia.
As the monsoon winds leaves Central
Asia, the Coriolis effect causes the
winds to deflect to the right, causing
the winds to become the Northeast
Monsoon.
As the Northeast monsoon winds
blows over the land, the air is cold and
dry.
8. As a result,Thailand would experience
little rainfall during this period.

Summer
Winter
10. Central Asia and Australia
Summer - Hot, High Rainfall Winter - cold
Realise any patterns?
11. Central Asia and Australia
Summer - Hot, High Rainfall Winter - cold
Realise any patterns?
12. Central Asia and Australia
Summer - Hot, High Rainfall Winter - cold
Realise any patterns?
13. same pattern = c
same climate type
Tropical Climate
High temp. and rainfall all year round
Monsoon Climate
Rainy season + Dry Season
Warm Temperate
4 Seasons (Spring, Summer,Autumn,Winter)
14. refer to your handout
What are the characteristics of each climate?
How do we determine which climate a place is
