Working Title: A glossary of computer networks terms applied into Marketing
General Line of Research: Applied linguistics
Nature of Research: Documentary research
Date: December 15, 2013
Abstract
The proposal of this research is to devise a Spanish-English glossary that will be useful to
students who want to clarify some doubts about computer networks terms. Nowadays,
every people have at least some shallow approach with technology so it is important to
have this kind of tools for making easer, at the same time faster work. This work will
have as a topic “The use of computer networks terms applied into Marketing”. It refers
to how some people need to know general informatics terms just to adapt them in a way
of offering a service or trying to sale something related. This topic become interest on
me because of the job I have been developing on the marketing area, using the
necessary vocabulary for my common use.
Introduction

Background
Looking forward for any similar work, I did not find any then this situation made me
easer to be convinced to develop mine for helping students and people who works with
the language with a non-specific area. It could be helpful for people who work in an
investigation or translation matters.
This work has a specific inspiration on my job; I have always been working on the
Marketing area, so I have been in touch with technology terms, but what made me
decide on this topic is that the company I work with, attempts people from Belize then
the use of English is common and this tool will help not just people from Marketing. It
will helps too students or teachers who want to increase lexicon in terms of technology;
computer networks exactly. Through my experience I have faced some troubles with
terminology I do not use often but necessary in my development as an employee.
Because of this kind of limitation I have been in necessity of finding extra information at
the time of explaining services making my work slower and deficient. In means that I
need to use some of my free time researching some specific aspects on my own, at the
same time try to clarify any doubt for felling myself well prepared for the following
meeting with customers. Obviously, this method I applied into my career have been
useful not just for doing my job, I have achieved it into my personal life improving
lexicon, fluency of speaking and the most important thing, to solve problems rapidly and
efficiently.
1.2 Rationale
A good reason to consider this research useful is because of the opportunity to show
other areas in which students of “Lengua Inglesa” could use knowledge and language
at the same time. Developing skills about how to combine the powerful ability of
communication with an important participant in different areas like marketing. This
interesting specialty is present in my interest because of the experience I have got
relating structure of different companies with process and policies that they follow in
order to be the most important not just in Mexico but around the world. I have been
working with companies who offer foodstuffs, services and technology. The last one is
the one I really enjoy; we are in an age in which technology is the spinal cord of huge
companies and government. For me is a challenge to learn something different every
time, taking into account that technology change day after day I consider easer to
choose what I really enjoy doing.
Talking about the south of Quintana Roo is a place where we receive a lot of people
from different places and cultures using English as a second language. Motivating me
on working in a project useful for people who is in touch with English not just in case of
work but if students would like to know something new in process of learning English.
Having another important reason why this glossary will be useful is because at the
University of Quintana Roo there are foreigner students. Most of them speak English,
for instance, other students who come from Belize. They speak English as a second
language and Spanish as third one. The situation is that they have the hard work on
vocabulary, for that reason they frequently have problems to communicate with
students who work with them because of the language.
Objectives
The general objective to this work is to make accessible vocabulary to different
readers who were interested in the marketing area. Sometimes a word can have one
or more meanings. Therefore, it is very important to know when or how to use each
one so that we can avoid misunderstandings and a wrong use of a specific word. To
provide the most meaningful words that could help students and consultants to
solve problems. In order to do this, it is necessary to look up the definition of the
word in a dictionary, book, or glossary. At the same time to have another source of
information, supporting research and help to familiarize and improve vocabulary
learning with the terms in this paper.
Finally, this work will promote interest on how other specialized areas are related
with language and common situations. And an important fact that I analyzed was
that in the University of Quintana Roo (UQroo) there is no glossary with this topic.
1.4 Significance/relevance of the research project.
This project is focus mainly on helping people who want to improve lexicon, as I
said before is not a usual topic furthermore that I changed the main idea of why I
am in “Lengua Inglesa” Mayor adapting it on Marketing what is I am really
interested in. Through these years I have got involved and appreciate marketing
because of passion I reflect when I am doing my job. On the other hand, nowadays
there are a lot of people interested on learning English, being the UQroo an
important library for external people it would be good to have a glossary with the
characteristics I propose. I am interested in provide a tool not just for students but
teachers and consultants too who are interested on English language acquisition.
2. Review of Literature.
First of all it should be good to understand with a definition what a glossary is or what
is it for. The Oxford dictionary define it as an alphabetical list of words relating to a
specific subject, text, or dialect, with explanations; a brief dictionary. It is important
to say that will be helpful for consultants and for people who want to translate a
document or texts.
For a quality translation it is important to develop a good glossary of terms. In this
section we list the various tools that can help students and teachers to create and
manage such a glossary. To create a glossary of terms (words and phrases), you can
either create it as you go along during a pilot project, or you can extract terms from
the source text and compile them into a glossary. The advantage of creating it during
a pilot project is that the term list is created in context, but the disadvantage is that it
is a slower method and it yields fewer terms (although most terms are useful). The
advantages of automatic term extraction are that it is fast and yields potentially more
relevant terms. The disadvantage is that terms are not viewed in context, and you
have to initially search through many unimportant or useless terms. The
disadvantages of either method can be overcome though.
There are some tools which can help to create a list for developing a glossary like the
monolingual term extractors which usually look for words or phrases that occur more
than X number of times in the text, or for words that occur in the text but do not occur
in a dictionary or established term list. Such an extraction usually contains a large
percentage of useless terms unless steps are taken to remove irrelevant repetitions
from the result. Whichever way you look at it, a glossary is a database, and most
comprehensive glossaries can be edited in a database editor tool. For simple, threecolumn glossaries, a spreadsheet program may be all that is necessary. There are quite
a few glossary viewers, but they often require that you convert your glossary to their
weird format. Examples are StarDict, Jalingo, jDictionary and Pododict. If you’re
willing to pay for a non-free product, AnyLexic is an excellent glossary tool that
supports simple formats too. Approximately five to ten percent of unknown terms will
not be found in the online dictionaries. For these, students will have to intensify
research. Start with visiting sources such as Google. A glossary, also known as a
vocabulary or clavis, is an alphabetical list of terms in a particular domain of
knowledge with the definitions for those terms. Traditionally, a glossary appears at
the end of a book and includes terms within that book that are either newly
introduced, uncommon, or specialized. While glossaries are most-commonly
associated with non-fiction books, in some cases, fiction novels may come with a
glossary for unfamiliar terms. A bilingual glossary is a list of terms in one language
defined in a second language or glossed by synonyms (or at least near-synonyms) in
another language. In a general sense, a glossary contains explanations of concepts
relevant to a certain field of study or action.
In this sense, the term is related to the notion of a specialized topic. Automatic methods
have been also provided that transform a glossary into the topic.
Otherwise, another kind of glossary is the “core glossary” is a simple glossary or defining
dictionary that enables definition of other concepts, especially for newcomers to a
language or field of study. It contains a small working vocabulary and definitions for
important or frequently encountered concepts, usually including idioms or metaphors
useful in a culture. Because this paper is focus on Marketing I found some specialized web
sites that related Glossaries with Informatics networks. I found some links and web sites
specialized on informatics networks, other ones in marketing terms, but I did not find
information with all areas in a developed research, so I separate topics for concluding
according my experience. To have Marketing glossaries as a tool of research comes to
improve the efficacy of advertising. It may focus on a specific ad or campaign, or may be
directed at a more general understanding of how advertising works or how consumers use
the information in advertising. It can entail a variety of research approaches, including
psychological, sociological, economic, and other perspectives. For example, the Internet
marketing industry uses terminology that can be confusing to newcomers.
www.lazworld.com has developed a glossary of terms to help guide students through the
jargon. The same thing with informatics terms, for this I choose three areas for making an
interest glossary involving an important fact that people use every single day which is
technology combined with marketing which is in everything we saw in announcements.
Obviously applying knowledge got it in Lengua Inglesa Mayor Degree.
3. Method.
According to the sources I found they establish that the general method for constructing
a glossary is collect vocabulary and definitions, establish format rules, establish rules for
writing definitions, examine definitions for multiple meanings, write basic definitions,
review and compare for consistency of meaning, classify, select preferred words, group
words, review and finalize the glossary. In practice, some of these steps are omitted,
while other steps are developed considerably, depending on the final objective of the
glossary. The complexity of detail for any phase of the glossary depends upon the scope
of the glossary and the size of the vocabulary. Starting from a wide list of terms with the
objective of building a whole glossary with inputs of several researchers could consume
a great amount of time and effort. Therefore, a specific methodology was defined:
• To define the purpose of the glossary.
• To build an initial list of terms and definitions using a semiautomatic glossary
acquisition.
• To complete the glossary by means of manual inputs and reviews, that is the extension
of the glossary.
As I said before, this entire project is based on different areas because of my experience
in marketing combined with informatics networks which is the service that I offer to my
customers; and language. I have always been worried on an enough interesting topic to
research about, and then I look forward to other choices I taught relevant. Nowadays, I
have noticed that the most interesting research that a person could do, must be the
topic about an area which performance demonstrates the level of attainment in a job or
a situation. This characteristic on me let me demonstrate knowledge, skills, attitudes
that distinguish to me as an excellent performer. The functional knowledge related to
my job let me too find the best talent making hurry the productivity giving me
advantage against other employees.
Because of this, my project must help in order to clarify doubts and possible
applications. This fact becomes critical when the research project has different related
research areas. There are several benefits in creating an accessible glossary.
• Semantic unification: the glossary represents an informal, but shared view of relevant
concepts.
• Classification/retrieval of documents: glossary terms may be used for indexing
documents and databases.
• Integration of competences from different research areas.
After clarify what I want to achieve with this project, it is important I say that I am
convinced that will be a difficult task to find the most important words but will be an
important challenge for developing a new source for students that they will have in a
priory of doubts and interesting facts of general knowledge.
Finally; after decide the group of the chosen terms which will be in the project, I am
thinking on create to columns of terms separating in the first one the terms in
English joined by the definition. On the other column, I will group the Spanish terms
with the respective definition. All of this will be analyze by my supervisors then
possibly authorization. On the other hand, following this format I will order terms
alphabetically in order to facilitate the consult. Meanwhile, next to the English terms
I will establish the equivalent word in Spanish with definition. As could be
appreciated in the sample of the Glossary research done by Roberto Carlos Ucán
Cámara showed below.

This work will have as a topic “The use of computer networks terms applied into Marketing”. It refers to how some people need to know general informatics terms just to adapt them in a way of offering a service or trying to sale something related. This topic become interest on me because of the job I have been developing on the marketing area, using the necessary vocabulary for my common use.
  • 3. Introduction Background Looking forward for any similar work, I did not find any then this situation made me easer to be convinced to develop mine for helping students and people who works with the language with a non-specific area. It could be helpful for people who work in an investigation or translation matters. This work has a specific inspiration on my job; I have always been working on the Marketing area, so I have been in touch with technology terms, but what made me decide on this topic is that the company I work with, attempts people from Belize then the use of English is common and this tool will help not just people from Marketing. It will helps too students or teachers who want to increase lexicon in terms of technology; computer networks exactly. Through my experience I have faced some troubles with terminology I do not use often but necessary in my development as an employee. Because of this kind of limitation I have been in necessity of finding extra information at the time of explaining services making my work slower and deficient. In means that I need to use some of my free time researching some specific aspects on my own, at the same time try to clarify any doubt for felling myself well prepared for the following meeting with customers. Obviously, this method I applied into my career have been useful not just for doing my job, I have achieved it into my personal life improving lexicon, fluency of speaking and the most important thing, to solve problems rapidly and efficiently.
  • 4. 1.2 Rationale A good reason to consider this research useful is because of the opportunity to show other areas in which students of “Lengua Inglesa” could use knowledge and language at the same time. Developing skills about how to combine the powerful ability of communication with an important participant in different areas like marketing. This interesting specialty is present in my interest because of the experience I have got relating structure of different companies with process and policies that they follow in order to be the most important not just in Mexico but around the world. I have been working with companies who offer foodstuffs, services and technology. The last one is the one I really enjoy; we are in an age in which technology is the spinal cord of huge companies and government. For me is a challenge to learn something different every time, taking into account that technology change day after day I consider easer to choose what I really enjoy doing. Talking about the south of Quintana Roo is a place where we receive a lot of people from different places and cultures using English as a second language. Motivating me on working in a project useful for people who is in touch with English not just in case of work but if students would like to know something new in process of learning English. Having another important reason why this glossary will be useful is because at the University of Quintana Roo there are foreigner students. Most of them speak English, for instance, other students who come from Belize. They speak English as a second language and Spanish as third one. The situation is that they have the hard work on vocabulary, for that reason they frequently have problems to communicate with students who work with them because of the language.
  • 5. Objectives The general objective to this work is to make accessible vocabulary to different readers who were interested in the marketing area. Sometimes a word can have one or more meanings. Therefore, it is very important to know when or how to use each one so that we can avoid misunderstandings and a wrong use of a specific word. To provide the most meaningful words that could help students and consultants to solve problems. In order to do this, it is necessary to look up the definition of the word in a dictionary, book, or glossary. At the same time to have another source of information, supporting research and help to familiarize and improve vocabulary learning with the terms in this paper. Finally, this work will promote interest on how other specialized areas are related with language and common situations. And an important fact that I analyzed was that in the University of Quintana Roo (UQroo) there is no glossary with this topic.
  • 6. 1.4 Significance/relevance of the research project. This project is focus mainly on helping people who want to improve lexicon, as I said before is not a usual topic furthermore that I changed the main idea of why I am in “Lengua Inglesa” Mayor adapting it on Marketing what is I am really interested in. Through these years I have got involved and appreciate marketing because of passion I reflect when I am doing my job. On the other hand, nowadays there are a lot of people interested on learning English, being the UQroo an important library for external people it would be good to have a glossary with the characteristics I propose. I am interested in provide a tool not just for students but teachers and consultants too who are interested on English language acquisition.
  • 7. 2. Review of Literature. First of all it should be good to understand with a definition what a glossary is or what is it for. The Oxford dictionary define it as an alphabetical list of words relating to a specific subject, text, or dialect, with explanations; a brief dictionary. It is important to say that will be helpful for consultants and for people who want to translate a document or texts. For a quality translation it is important to develop a good glossary of terms. In this section we list the various tools that can help students and teachers to create and manage such a glossary. To create a glossary of terms (words and phrases), you can either create it as you go along during a pilot project, or you can extract terms from the source text and compile them into a glossary. The advantage of creating it during a pilot project is that the term list is created in context, but the disadvantage is that it is a slower method and it yields fewer terms (although most terms are useful). The advantages of automatic term extraction are that it is fast and yields potentially more relevant terms. The disadvantage is that terms are not viewed in context, and you have to initially search through many unimportant or useless terms. The disadvantages of either method can be overcome though.
  • 8. There are some tools which can help to create a list for developing a glossary like the monolingual term extractors which usually look for words or phrases that occur more than X number of times in the text, or for words that occur in the text but do not occur in a dictionary or established term list. Such an extraction usually contains a large percentage of useless terms unless steps are taken to remove irrelevant repetitions from the result. Whichever way you look at it, a glossary is a database, and most comprehensive glossaries can be edited in a database editor tool. For simple, threecolumn glossaries, a spreadsheet program may be all that is necessary. There are quite a few glossary viewers, but they often require that you convert your glossary to their weird format. Examples are StarDict, Jalingo, jDictionary and Pododict. If you’re willing to pay for a non-free product, AnyLexic is an excellent glossary tool that supports simple formats too. Approximately five to ten percent of unknown terms will not be found in the online dictionaries. For these, students will have to intensify research. Start with visiting sources such as Google. A glossary, also known as a vocabulary or clavis, is an alphabetical list of terms in a particular domain of knowledge with the definitions for those terms. Traditionally, a glossary appears at the end of a book and includes terms within that book that are either newly introduced, uncommon, or specialized. While glossaries are most-commonly associated with non-fiction books, in some cases, fiction novels may come with a glossary for unfamiliar terms. A bilingual glossary is a list of terms in one language defined in a second language or glossed by synonyms (or at least near-synonyms) in another language. In a general sense, a glossary contains explanations of concepts relevant to a certain field of study or action.
  • 9. In this sense, the term is related to the notion of a specialized topic. Automatic methods have been also provided that transform a glossary into the topic. Otherwise, another kind of glossary is the “core glossary” is a simple glossary or defining dictionary that enables definition of other concepts, especially for newcomers to a language or field of study. It contains a small working vocabulary and definitions for important or frequently encountered concepts, usually including idioms or metaphors useful in a culture. Because this paper is focus on Marketing I found some specialized web sites that related Glossaries with Informatics networks. I found some links and web sites specialized on informatics networks, other ones in marketing terms, but I did not find information with all areas in a developed research, so I separate topics for concluding according my experience. To have Marketing glossaries as a tool of research comes to improve the efficacy of advertising. It may focus on a specific ad or campaign, or may be directed at a more general understanding of how advertising works or how consumers use the information in advertising. It can entail a variety of research approaches, including psychological, sociological, economic, and other perspectives. For example, the Internet marketing industry uses terminology that can be confusing to newcomers. www.lazworld.com has developed a glossary of terms to help guide students through the jargon. The same thing with informatics terms, for this I choose three areas for making an interest glossary involving an important fact that people use every single day which is technology combined with marketing which is in everything we saw in announcements. Obviously applying knowledge got it in Lengua Inglesa Mayor Degree.
  • 10. 3. Method. According to the sources I found they establish that the general method for constructing a glossary is collect vocabulary and definitions, establish format rules, establish rules for writing definitions, examine definitions for multiple meanings, write basic definitions, review and compare for consistency of meaning, classify, select preferred words, group words, review and finalize the glossary. In practice, some of these steps are omitted, while other steps are developed considerably, depending on the final objective of the glossary. The complexity of detail for any phase of the glossary depends upon the scope of the glossary and the size of the vocabulary. Starting from a wide list of terms with the objective of building a whole glossary with inputs of several researchers could consume a great amount of time and effort. Therefore, a specific methodology was defined: • To define the purpose of the glossary. • To build an initial list of terms and definitions using a semiautomatic glossary acquisition. • To complete the glossary by means of manual inputs and reviews, that is the extension of the glossary.
  • 11. As I said before, this entire project is based on different areas because of my experience in marketing combined with informatics networks which is the service that I offer to my customers; and language. I have always been worried on an enough interesting topic to research about, and then I look forward to other choices I taught relevant. Nowadays, I have noticed that the most interesting research that a person could do, must be the topic about an area which performance demonstrates the level of attainment in a job or a situation. This characteristic on me let me demonstrate knowledge, skills, attitudes that distinguish to me as an excellent performer. The functional knowledge related to my job let me too find the best talent making hurry the productivity giving me advantage against other employees. Because of this, my project must help in order to clarify doubts and possible applications. This fact becomes critical when the research project has different related research areas. There are several benefits in creating an accessible glossary. • Semantic unification: the glossary represents an informal, but shared view of relevant concepts. • Classification/retrieval of documents: glossary terms may be used for indexing documents and databases. • Integration of competences from different research areas.
  • 12. After clarify what I want to achieve with this project, it is important I say that I am convinced that will be a difficult task to find the most important words but will be an important challenge for developing a new source for students that they will have in a priory of doubts and interesting facts of general knowledge. Finally; after decide the group of the chosen terms which will be in the project, I am thinking on create to columns of terms separating in the first one the terms in English joined by the definition. On the other column, I will group the Spanish terms with the respective definition. All of this will be analyze by my supervisors then possibly authorization. On the other hand, following this format I will order terms alphabetically in order to facilitate the consult. Meanwhile, next to the English terms I will establish the equivalent word in Spanish with definition. As could be appreciated in the sample of the Glossary research done by Roberto Carlos Ucán Cámara showed below.
