By Mrs. Radner’s 3rd Grade Class
Created in Computer Class with Ms. Rothfeld
                June 2012
Third graders at Hillel Day School learned about the city of
Detroit in the classroom, through a field trip, and through
individual research. Each third grader researched a specific place
of significance in Detroit. Students used what they learned to
write about the place and to design a PowerPoint slide.

This project helped students to develop skills in research, note-
taking, summarizing, technology and design. The final product,
which you see here, is a presentation to teach others about the
importance and historical significance of Detroit, whether you
                    have ever visited or not!

The work for this project was done in students’ classrooms and in
their weekly computer class with Ms. Rothfeld.

Cobo Center
Cobo Center is meant for
events. The North American
International Auto Show is held
there and there are a lot of
conferences held in there. In
Cobo Center, there is a lot to
see, like glass ceilings and big
and fancy rooms. There is
interesting information about
Cobo Center. It recycles a lot.
Its name comes from Mayor
Albert E. Cobo. He was a mayor
from 1950-1957. Cobo Center Michigan.org
was first opened in 1960. I
hope you like Cobo Center!

Detroit Historical Museum
Hello, my name is Hannah. I will be taking you on a
fascinating information tour of the Detroit
Historical Museum. First stop: “How the Detroit
Historical Museum is important.” The Detroit
Historical Museum helps us learn about historical
things in Detroit. Also, the Detroit Historical
Museum is where over 15,000 Michigan students
visit a year! Now, next stop: “What people can do
or learn there.” At the Detroit Historical Museum

                                                                    Detroithistorical.org
you can see all sorts of historical papers or
landmarks, and at the Detroit Historical Museum
you can learn how Detroit became the automobile
capital of the world! Last stop: “What is interesting
about the Detroit Historical Museum.” The Detroit
Historical Museum opened in 1945, so they have a
lot of experience in making things interesting!
Thank you for taking the info tour! I hope you
enjoyed it!
Goodbye!

Detroit Public Library
The Detroit Public Library is a very big
library. Here are some facts about the
Detroit Public Library. The Detroit Public
Library opened in 1865. The library was
always filled with people in 1865 because
there were no TVs or computers in 1865.
The people entertained themselves with

                                                           Detroit1701.org
books: children’s books, grown-up books,
or any books. That’s not all we have at the
Detroit Public Library. The library has
classes and special events on certain days.
The library has more than 4,000,000
books. The library provides books for free.
Make sure you return the books you
borrow. If you don’t return your books on
time, the library will charge you a bill. The
Detroit Public Library is great!

                                                Dalia A.
Hart Plaza
Hart Plaza is a really big plaza with a few amphitheaters. Hart Plaza is famous for
its concerts and other entertainment. You should go to Hart Plaza’s festivals and
concerts because they are very fun. In Hart Plaza there is a gorgeous fountain in
the center. Hart Plaza was opened in 1975 and is named after Phillip A. Hart. He
was a U.S. senator from Michigan. Hart Plaza is an interesting place to visit.

                                                      Motorcitypride.org Casie M.
Detroit Institute of Arts
The Detroit Institute of Arts is
also known as the DIA. The
DIA has some of the most
beautiful art. There are
paintings, sculptures, masks,
even mummies and many
more cool pieces of art in the
DIA. The DIA has over 65,000
pieces of art. The DIA has fun
tours and a very big
auditorium. The DIA is over
150 years old. The DIA is an

COMERICA PARK
THE FISHER BUILDING

In the Fisher Building there are shops,
offices, and radio stations. You can see
the pretty building and learn about its
history. Before World War II, there was
gold on the building, but during WWII
they had to peel off the gold because they
were afraid people would bomb it. The
people who built the Fisher Building were
the Fisher brothers. The Fisher Building
became a National Historic Site in 1982.
That is what I know about the Fisher
  Building.

Hello! My name is Emma! I am
going to tell you about the
Detroit Opera House. First, the
                                   Detroit Opera House
Detroit Opera House was
designed by C. Howard Crane.
Mr. Crane also designed the Fox
Theater, and C. Howard was a
very talented man. At the
Opera House, you can see really
good performances. The
second you walk through the
door, you notice the Opera
House’s beautiful walls and
ceilings. Did you know that
people have been going to the
Opera House for 90 years? Also,
did you know that they opened

                                                           Detroit1701.org
in 1922? The Opera House is
one of the best opera houses in
the country. In my opinion, the
Detroit Opera House is one of
the best buildings in the world! Emma G.
The Spirit of Detroit
The Spirit of Detroit was built in the 1950’s. It is a sculpture of a man sitting holding
a sphere in one hand and a family group in the other hand. Many people call it “The
Jolly Green Giant” because of its color. The statue was made of bronze. It is 26 feet
high. When the Red Wings win, the Spirit of Detroit is dressed in a huge Detroit Red
Wings jersey. The Spirit of Detroit also represents Detroit and lets Detroit know that
Detroit is a good place.

Museum of African American History

At this museum, people can
learn about African American
history. People can see more
than 30,000 artifacts at the
museum. You can see a library
and a museum store and a
museum theater. There is an
exhibit called “And So We Rise.”
There are many wonderful
exhibits and speakers and
concerts. The Museum of

The People Mover

The People Mover helps
people get from place to
place around Detroit. It
brings people to places
like Cobo Center and more.
It is above ground. It has
newspaper patterns and
very colorful things on it.
The cars are cozy and
clean. It goes 56 miles per
hour. It’s operated by
computers. It has 12 Lightrailnow.org

vehicles. It only costs 75
cents to rIde. It’s open
every day!

                                                 Lillian B.
RENAISSANCE CENTER
The Ren Cen has five
buildings. They have
offices, shops,
restaurants, and a
theater in the Ren Cen.
In the Food Court, there
are 1,000 chairs. The
Ren Cen is owned by
General Motors. It is
next to the Detroit River.
The Marriott Hotel is in
the Renaissance Center
and is 75 stories high. It
is fabulous!

                                         Rachel B.
THE FISHER BUILDING
At the Fisher Building, everyone can find
something that he/she likes. There are
offices, restaurants, stores, and more. The
Fisher Building is helpful, useful and
important because it has places that people
work in, and it is a Michigan landmark. At
the Fisher Building, people can see movies
in the Fisher Theater, people can shop, and
people can see pretty materials like bronze.
The Fisher Building was designed by Albert
Kahn and built by the seven Fisher brothers.
The brothers didn’t care how much it cost.
They wanted it to be the most beautiful
building. It ended up costing $10,000,000.
It is 445 feet tall and 25 stories high. It was
so beautiful that people started calling it
“Detroit’s largest art object.” That is what I
know about the Fisher Building. Isabel Z.

Gem and Century Theater

                                                                                          Michigan.org
The Gem and Century Theater is a very cool place. One interesting fact about the Gem
and Century Theater is that the theater was built in 1927. Another fact about the
theater is that it moved five blocks away from where it was originally built. There are so
many fun things to do like going to musical shows and holiday parties. There are a bunch
of fun things to do! You should go and see all the interesting things at the Gem and
Century Theater. Marlee K.
Detroit Historical Museum
The Detroit Historical Museum
has something for everyone. It
gives you a great educational
experience. There are lots of
things you can see and do, like
cobblestone streets, Times of
Detroit, and so much more. There
are also lots of exhibits from auto
assembly lines from the General
Motors Cadillac plant to the

                                              Detroithistorical.org
Frontiers and Factories exhibit.
Whatever you do, you will not be
bored. You should come and see
it! It is lots of fun!

Ford Field

Ford Field is important
for Detroit Lions
football, concerts, and
trade shows. People
can see football and
the Detroit skyline.
They can buy snacks at
Ford Field. Ford Field
opened in 2002. It has
105 restrooms, 65,000
seats, and 11 locker
rooms. Ford Field is
                          Michigan.org
really cool! Asa W.
People Mover
The People Mover takes you to
different places in Detroit. It is fast.
It is open every day. It takes 15
minutes to go around the city. The
People Mover rides on a track. It
takes you to cool places. It is easy.
There is no driver. The People
Mover is a fun part of Detroit.

DETROIT PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Detroit Public Library is an
amazing place, not just
because it is the largest library
in Michigan, but because of
the special events there and
the fact that it houses over
4,000,000 books. The Library
opened in 1865. Back then it
didn’t have nearly as many Detroit1701.org
books. You can also learn a lot
from all the books. You can
also see all the amazing
events. The Library is
extremely useful because you
can check out almost any
book. The Detroit Public
Library is extremely important
because of all the books. I
can’t wait to go there! Robert V.

Each third grader researched a specific place of significance in Detroit. Students used what they learned to write about the place and to design a PowerPoint slide. This project helped students to develop skills in research, note- taking, summarizing, technology and design. The final product, which you see here, is a presentation to teach others about the importance and historical significance of Detroit, whether you have ever visited or not! The work for this project was done in students’ classrooms and in their weekly computer class with Ms. Rothfeld.
