2. Advertising photography is when photographs are used to
illustrate a product or idea to either promote or sell them.
Advertising photography is used in many areas of photography
such as glamour, food, still life and advertising/marketing
itself.
Fashion and glamour photography is a form of advertising
photography. Fashion photography emphasizes usually clothes
and other products but the glamour emphasizes the model
and body form. Many perfumes and aftershave adverts use
glamour/fashion photography to make the product stand out
more by using photos taken by fashion photographers.
Food and still life advertising photography is very similar but
food advertising usually requires some special skills
(photoshopping blemishes out food etc). Still life and food
photographs can be used in magazine advertisements.
3. This is a perfume advert by Dolce & Gabbana featuring
actress and model Scarlett Johansson who is the face of
their advertising campaigns.
This product uses Scarlett‟s beauty and fame to increase
the sale of there perfume. The audience will buy it based
on the fact a famous celebrity, Scarlett Johansson, uses
and endorses it. The audience, which is most likely
young females, will think „If I buy this perfume, I will be
like her, even if it only means I smell like her‟.
Scarlett‟s facial expressions show confidence yet mystery
as she looks away from the camera lens, which can also
been seen as sexy and seductive.
The colours are rather soft and light, which provides
natural brightness. The gold in the background gives off
a rich and comforting feel.
The product name “the one” suggests in this advert that
Scarlett is „the one‟, the most important being and
unique to everyone else. The name and advert can also
suggest that she is looking at someone and whoever she
is looking at, so the person looking at the ad, is the one
because she isn‟t looking straight into the camera but
more to the right of it.
4. Equipment:
• An Digital SLR camera with interchangeable lenses.
• 2-3 Studio lights to provide enough lighting on the product and
models. Get as much light bouncing of the surface of the
product for that natural shine.
• Umbrellas to diffuse the light when photographing models.
• Tripod for sturdiness.
• Photoshop for image manipulation and editing
Models should be males as my product is a men‟s aftershave so it
needs to appeal to men and preferably wearing suits for the smart
look. All I really need is permission and the model release form.
For a studio, I can easily book one.
5. The Advertising Standards Authority is the UK‟s independent regulator of
advertising across all media. They apply the Advertising Codes, which are
written by the Committees of Advertising Practice. Their work includes acting
on complaints and proactively checking the media to take action against
misleading, harmful or offensive advertisements.
Examples:
• Adverts must not contain anything that is likely to cause serious or widespread
offence. Particular care must be taken to avoid causing offence on the grounds of
race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability or age.
• Adverts must not cause fear or distress without justifiable reason.
• Adverts must not use a shocking claim or image merely to attract attention.
• Adverts must contain nothing that is likely to condone or encourage violence or anti-
social behavior.
• Adverts must not mislead the consumer by omitting material information. They must
not mislead by hiding material information or presenting it in an
unclear, unintelligible, ambiguous or untimely manner.
• Adverts targeted directly at children must contain nothing that is likely to result in
their physical, mental or moral harm.
6. Tim Tadder is a commercial photographer currently
residing in California. Tim has worked as a newspaper
writer and photojournalist but his true calling was to
be a commercial and editorial photographer which he
became in 2005. Since then, Tim has produced many
portraits and is well known for his outstanding sports
photographs which capture the essence and life of the
subject and what‟s around it. I honestly chose Tim
because he was the first thing to pop up on Google
but after viewing some of his work, I was in awe with
the detail and imagery it gave out.
Tim takes dynamic and crisp photos usually from the
front or side to capture the movement of the subjects
body and his facial expression.
My product could be used in one of his photographs
to promote both sports and men‟s aftershave. With
the sharp edged photos and my product, we could
create a superb advertisement that would stand out
from the rest for it‟s uniqueness.
7. I took photos of a men‟s aftershave called Millions by paco rabanne. Since the
shape of the bottle, or in this case a metal container didn‟t look appealing, I
had to take shots from certain angles and perspectives to make it look more
appealing. Front shots were out of the question since it would just look like a
rectangular box. Also, I used the metallic gold surface of the container to m
advantage. I tried to get in as much reflection and light to bounce off, to get
that bit of realism and shine. I used the focal point grid for many of the photos
that extra re-assurance and you should be able to notice in which ones.

11. My advert is for a men‟s aftershave called „Million‟ by
paco rabanne. When you first look at the advert you
think „What the hell?‟ but if you look deeper and think
„why‟, you will sooner or later figure it out. The message
I wanted to send was that „You don‟t wear the
aftershave, the aftershave wears you‟. This is why I
replaced the heads of the models and put the bottle and
packaging instead. I used suits just for the smart and
expensive look. If I had used casual closing, it would
look less appealing to rich citizens or celebrities.
