This document discusses how terms of service agreements of social media sites can impact research design. It notes that while these agreements have not been tested in courts regarding academic research, they raise issues about who has access to what data and how data must be collected and presented. The document advises researchers to ask social media sites for permission to conduct research, exemption from problematic terms, or notification only. It also recommends having backup plans and cites five criteria for fair academic use of copyrighted materials.
