Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, play an essential role in ecosystems by breaking down dead organic matter and recycling nutrients back into the soil and environment. Without decomposers, dead plants and animals would accumulate and nutrients would not be returned to the soil to support new plant growth. Decomposers recycle carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and other nutrients by breaking down dead matter into simpler inorganic molecules.
