Hurricane Andrew impacted south Florida in1992 and Hurricane Wilma made landfall in southwest Florida in 2005. Both of these hurricanes caused massive destruction to Florida, creating a lot of uncertainty and concern as Hurricane Irma approached. Hurricane Irma broke multiple records, becoming the largest Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic. As Irma tracked towards Collier County, neighboring Lee County feared for the worst. Following its impact, Irma caused billions of dollar worth of damage to the economy, as well as to property and productivity damages. Lee County officials were able to put into action the plans that had been put in place for Hurricane incidence response, evacuations and public safety, while working together to restore the county as quickly as possible.

Globally each year natural disasters kill thousands of people and inflict billions of dollars in economic losses. No nation or community is immune to their damage. The World Health Organization estimates that between 1964 and 1983 natural disaster throughout the world killed nearly 2.5 million people and left an additional 750 million injured, homeless or otherwise harmed. In recent decades, the world has faced an increasing number of natural and man-made disasters. Such disasters include tsunamis, earthquakes, the current ongoing financial crisis, terrorism, riots, and wars. These disasters generate tremendous social and economic costs, especially for the poor in low income economies. Bangladesh is the most vulnerable to climate change, as well as one of the most disasters prone countries in the world. Bangladesh’s flat topography, law-lying and climate features, combined with its population density and socio-economic environment, make it highly susceptible to many natural hazards, including flats, drought, cyclones and earthquakes. In Bangladesh perspective, more than 80% of the population is potentially exposed to floods, earthquakes and drought, and more than 70% to cyclones. Severe flooding occur every 4-5 years covers 60% of end mass. During time of crisis, the media is an integral part of the disaster risk management process. UNESCO works actively to build the capacities of media during emergency and disaster situations and to lead the global debate on what their overall response should be. Bangladesh has made significant efforts to reduce its disaster vulnerability and is today considered a global leader in costal resilience due to its significant long-term investment in protecting lives.

Presentation at the Digital Museum Expo in Amsterdam, about digital restoration of museum objects applied in the Keys2Rome exhibitions in Amsterdam, Rome, Sarajevo and Alexandria. One of the main goals of the Keys2Rome exhibitions is to re-contextualise museum objects in their original environment. Digitising museum objects and building elements and digitally restoring them is crucial for this process. Digital restoration is not only important for this visualisation process, but is also a powerful research tool, that focuses on structure of the object, the creation technique and its use.

Presentation at the Digital Museum Expo in Amsterdam, about virtual reconstruction of a wide range of sites in the Roman Empire, applied in the Keys2Rome exhibitions in Amsterdam, Rome, Sarajevo and Alexandria. Virtual 3D reconstruction processes are scientific research processes that synthesise the knowledge of different domains to come to the most probable reconstruction of a man-made structure or landscape. This means that the process needs to be formalised and documented, in different ways, for different audiences (which we do through for example blogs and 3DPDF). But it means also that virtual reconstructions needs to be re-usable, hence they should be seen by museums and heritage institutions as investments, not as costs.

Presentation at the Digital Museum Expo in Amsterdam, about the design of innovative 3D interactive applications for museums. Integrating 3D in a museum context means also that easy interaction with 3D for a wide range of users is a must. We focus in this presentation on the design process and requirements of different types of interactive applications based on 3D digital heritage assets and how they can be applied in different museum activities.
