7. Common Activities
• Have students convert all prices to US dollars by using www.xe.com.
• Give students a budget in order to make the activity more realistic and to make them
think a little more.
• To ensure that students are exposed to and practice as much vocabulary as
possible, set parameters that must be met. These parameters can be explicitly
stated, or you can give the students controlled options - for example, require that
students select from a minimum number of categories.
• Have students make a list of cognates and newly learned vocabulary.
Browse the site(s) beforehand and make a list of vocabulary that you would like for the
students to learn during the activity.
• For students who finish early or as enrichment, have students complete a summary
about some aspect of their experience.
• If it is not possible for each student to have his or her own computer, they can work in
pairs or small groups. The teacher can also lead a whole group activity on the
projector and use student volunteers to dictate the next step or to answer questions
about the websites.
• Many of the activities in this section were inspired by Casa de Joanna: Language
Learning Resources (http://www.casadejoanna.com/casa/index.htm). Please visit the
