What is a Graphic Organizer and
Why Use a Graphic Organizers with your
Students?
A graphic organizer is a map that shows
relationships or connections between
thoughts, events or ideas.
Why Use a Graphic Organizer:
• Help students to make connections
• Help students organize ideas
• Grab Students Attention for new topic
• Activate Prior Knowledge before Reading
• Increase connections for reading comprehension

• RL 1.2 Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their
central message or lesson.

• Learn how to identify which graphic organizer
will work best for the lesson
• Learn how to create graphic organizers using
internet tools
• Learn how to create and use graphic
organizers during your class lessons
How to Create a Graphic Organizer
Online
• Decide what you want your graphic organizer to look
like
• Choose an online site to create your organizer (sites are
bookmarked on your computer, they are also listed on
the resource page)
• Follow the steps online it will walk you through the
process
• Don’t forget the Edit tools will help you to change
shapes or directions for your organizer
• Now practice filling it in while online, then you can
download it so that everyone can have a copy in your
class
Your Turn:
Creating a Graphic Organizer
• Pick a Topic (suggestion look at your new Reading Series and find a
topic that will enhance that lesson/theme
• Decide what type of graphic organizer/graphic organization will
work best for your lesson
• Two Ways to Create a Graphic Organizer
• Internet Sites that will help you with your design
• Google Draw (you will need to create a Google account for this if you don’t already have one)
• We are going to make two organizers today using both ways
• Create your graphic organizer and save it
• Now try another graphic organizer site creating a different graphic
organizer.
• Please email me the link(s) to your graphic organizers.
Graphic Organizer Sites are Bookmarked on the computer you are currently working on during
this class. The are also listed on the resource page.
