Diversion Based Flow Irrigation
to Enhance Rural Livelihoods in
        Eastern India

A Typical DBI system




It comprises of headwork (small weir, earthen tank or collection
tank) to divert required stream flow into conveyance system
(plastic pipelines) for carrying it to the agricultural fields
Objectives
•   Execute 28 schemes to irrigate 550ha in kharif
    and 274ha in rabi of 1,250 families
•   Enhance annual income of a family by at least
    Rs 15,000/- through improved agriculture
•   Demonstrate the utility of DBI schemes

10 districts of Orissa, WB, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and MP

Activities
• Identification of potential sites
• Formation of WUAs

• Planning of DBI scheme

• CSP selection and training
• Introduction of improved cropping practices
Achievements
• 44 schemes were executed to benefit 1,280
  families in very poor regions
• Irrigation potential created: 491ha in kharif and
  218ha in rabi
• Crop coverage: 859 families used 35 schemes
  to cover 174ha during kharif and 712 families
  used 36 schemes to cover 93ha during rabi
• SRI and vegetable cultivation were introduced
  with use of organic manure, machan system,
  polyhouse nursery, gliricidia fencing etc.
• Domestic water requirement was met wherever
  feasible
