Editor's Notes
Brings the world into the classroom - very motivating for pupils
Linking with partners abroad – access to school partnerships made much easier with internet.
Sharing work with a wider audience and being able to give and receive feedback is very motivational and also a great way of developing learning skills. Encouraging discussion, group work, constructive criticism, evaluation etc.
Knowing that your work will be recorded and published online gives the work status and also an extra impetus to do it well. Way of celebrating work and very good for self esteem of pupils.
Great if looking at newspapers in literacy e.g. With Year 6 – looking at fonts, headlines, use of photographs etc. Picking out key words – e.g. ‘Obama’ ‘Islam’
Visiting theme parks, looking at toy shops, children’s sites with popular films etc – all there at fingertips. Great for developing intercultural understanding and comparing with UK – highlights the similarities rather than the differences...
Daily weather around the world – great for embedding language into daily routine of classroom.
CILT Primary Languages Website – National Gateway to advice, information and support for primary languages – in Teaching and Learning section, discussion, professional development and practical teaching ideas around key themes e.g. Active learning, The International Dimension, Progression, but also resources – links to QCA, Library, guidance on choosing resources and great Online resources section. Here you can see the Local authority and school websites section which links to useful Primary Languages pages on the Gfls – resources, schemes of work, lesson plans etc.
West Sussex good example of useful GfL – see next slide.
Creativity, cross-curricular lesson plans etc. Lots of useful things to browse.

Independence – good way for children to work independently and creatively – they have choice of how to make character. Need to ensure that language remains focus here, that this is used carefully as treat at end of unit so that the language work that goes into it is given priority rather than time spent on creating an avatar!

Each coloured box is action button that takes you to slides giving example of this point. Motivation: Slides 1-3 Interactive, child-friendly – can really find resources that children will enjoy. E.g. Access: Slides 4-5, on e-twinning – access to lots of different partnerships and contact with ‘real’ speakers of the language. Etwinning good example of this. Action button bottom right slide 5 to bring you back. Wider audience: Slides 6-7 – voicethread, podcasting – very motivating for children to be able to share work with a wider audience, also to discuss work with others via applications like voicethread. Action button slide 7. World at fingertips: Slides 8-10 – newspapers (e.g. le Monde, good for linking with literacy work on newspapers), theme park (Asterix), weather...endless possibilities for going around the world. Could show Google Earth at this point as well...Action button slide 10. Collaboration and support: Slides 11-16 – lots of opportunity to access support and share materials with colleagues – CILT PL website – with email forum and links to grids for learning where you can access SoW, lesson plans, resources etc. Blogs – Lisa’s, Joe’s, Nings – Talkabout MFl. Action button slide 16. Independence – Slide 17 – Voki an example of children creating audio recording independently and then customising voki avatar...Action button slide 17.
