Students need to be connected to feel comfortable in learning. Technology is the connection that launches their learning and prepares them for "our" future.
1. Do What We Say, Not What We Do! We stress technology to our students daily We have Smart Boards in our rooms We have announcements fed to our rooms through the televisions We take attendance on-line Grades are posted for students/parents for them to view on-line
2. What is Open House Like? A handwritten schedule given to the parents to follow A typed/copied syllabus for parents to refer to An exhaustive walk around the building through their child’s schedule A contact phone number and e-mail to contact their teacher with questions
3. Where is the Technology? Where is the SmartBoard illustration showing how parents can obtain daily information about assignments through Edmodo? Where is the Edmodo tutorial? Where is the explanation about teacher web? Where is the SmartBoard demo?
4. What we need to communicate to parents! The world the students live in where they are constantly needing to feel connected The tools we will use to allow them to feel connected and learn the content Completed projects to show parents what their students will learn and how they will be connected How these tools will prepare them for their life after high school
5. What students need to hear on day 1! You will be a smarter generation than your teachers Illustrate some technology that is in their future How the content will be taught What will be taught isn’t as important to them They will work with their peers and help teach each other through technological means
6. We must Model what we teach We lose integrity with our students when we say one thing and teach something else Starting on the first day of class, we need to reduce their anxiety by creating an environment they are comfortable with Mobile Learning Devices SmartBoards Computer Projects
7. We have to teach them in their “language” Earn their attention and respect by teaching them something using their “language” of technology They love social networking and Edmodo is a controlled learning tool that uses social networking Teach them to take responsibility for their work by attaching files in Edmodo and making them accountable for checking Edmodo when they are absent
8. Why is a teacher absence a waste of a learning day? Teacher web and Edmodo have tools to record lessons and they can be played to the class when the teacher is absent Students can also see the same thing from their homes should they be absent
9. Technology Advantages - Teachers Keep students engaged Students want to learn through their “language” Extend the classroom outside of the school day Students have accountability for assignments No make-up work copies – They get it from the teacher web or Edmodo Students can help their classmates in Edmodo
10. Technology Advantages - Student Keeps their attention Challenging Familiar with technology language Connected to classmates and teacher on-line (Edmodo) Connected socially with classmates – Edmodo class specific Connected to class assignments and can obtain copies of needed documentation and deadlines
