Sleep cycle states:
• Stages 1, 2
– Light sleep and slow rolling eyes movement
– Non perception of outside stimuli (e.g. sound)
• Stages 3, 4
– Breathing become more shallow and more rapid
– Limbs are paralyzed and the body is harder to wake up
• Stage 5
– REM (rapid eye movement) sleep

Diagnosis:
• Clinical method
– Physical exam:
• enlarged uvula or soft palate
• extra or large tissues in mouth, nose, and throat.
– Sleep Study and polysomnogram (PSG): When you spend a
night in a sleep clinic, PSG will record brain activity, eye
movements, heart rate, oxygen level in blood and blood
pressure to diagnosis whether you have disorder or not

1. Do you experience any unintentionally falling asleep during the day?
2. Do you ever wake from sleep with a choking sound or gasping for
breath?

5. Do you have a neck size of 17 inches or more?
6. Do you have a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher?
7. Do you have high blood pressure?
