NEWPORT — First built in 1983 for the late Robert Hill, who was an interior
designer from Boston, South Wind is a pavilion­style house surrounded by
gardens on Jeffrey Road, which is located off Ocean Drive, near Spouting Rock
Beach and Gooseberry Beach.

2. Hill, working with architect Jim Gage, wanted to be able to exit each room through
French doors to a terrace. The multiple French doors, along with 11­foot ceilings,
oak floors painted in soft colors and custom paneled shutters, give the house an
elegant, old­world feel. It was featured on the cover of the March 1992 issue of
House Beautiful magazine.
"When Hill was planning South Wind, he said that several houses he had long
known helped guide his hand: the Princeton, Massachusetts, house built in the
18th century by his Boylston ancestors; Newport's vanished Villa Rosa, designed
by a fellow Bostonian, Ogden Codman; and Little Hazely, the English carriage
house of the American socialite­designer Nancy Lancaster," the article said. Hill
died at age 65, just a few years after South Wind was built.
"Robert Hill was a friend of interior designer Billy Baldwin and each greatly
admired the other's (similar) style — one of classical elegance and well­mannered
restraint, the very qualities seen in this, Hill's first and only new house," the article
added. "In Boston, Nantucket and Cape Cod he had lived at different times in four
romantic but demanding old houses. This, finally, was Robert Hill's dream house
from the ground up, and he kept refining it until the end."
The house sits on 1.18 acres with an easterly view of Almy Pond. The single­level
manse has been owned for many years by Sonia Wilson, a writer, artist and
gardener. She currently lives in the former garage of the estate, which she has
converted into a charming one­bedroom apartment, which also has its own private
terraced garden.
"I do all the gardening," she said.
In the main house, there is a long central hallway leading to two airy bedrooms,
each with its own private ensuite bathrooms. Another half bathroom is in the front
part of the home, near the sunny kitchen, which features open shelving and white­
painted beadboard wainscoting.
The main hallway in the center of the house connects with the great room and the
east garden.
The front door opens to a foyer, with the kitchen to the right and the formal dining
room to the left. The dining room connects to the great room, which also connects
to the central hallway.
Wilson said she hopes to find a buyer who would allow her to rent back her
apartment. "I don't want to travel anymore," she said. "I want to live here, quietly,
gently."
