3. Pollution is the introduction of a contaminant into the
environment. It is mostly created by human actions, but it
may be caused by natural disasters aswell. It is known that
pollution leads to depletion of the ozone layer, global
warming and climate change.
There are three main types of pullution: land pollution; air
pollution and water pollution. Land pollution is the
degradation of Earth's land surfaces. It is mainly caused by
human activities and their misuse of land resources.
4. Air pollution is the release of chemicals and particles into the
atmosphere. Stratospheric ozone depletion due to air
pollution has been recognized as a threat to human health as
well as to the Earth's ecosystems. Indoor air pollution and
urban air quality are also listed as two of the world's worst
pollution problems.
The water pollution is the subject that we will approach in
this work.
5. Water Pollution
The seas are about 71% of the surface of the planet, and houses
thousands of species that need water and its ecological niches to survive.
Despite the existing underwater life, the interference of man and his
disregard for his life greatly affects the problem.
There are no mysteries about sea pollution. The spill of non-treated
waters and objects that are discarded into the rivers, are mainly the great
contribute to pollution of the seas.
Most of these materials released into the oceans, take a long time to
decompose, making difficult the underwater life, because the living
beings that live underwater need their natural habitat healthy for.
6. For the underwater biodiversity to survival, it is essential clean water.
It is essential to life. So there should be a concern to preserve to prevent
contamination.
To the authorities responsible for the municipality it their function building
ETAR's for treatment of wastewater.
We, as consumers, it is us aware (environmental awareness) the importance of
water for life on planet Earth, the dangers of contamination and the need to
preserve it.
8. What causes pollution?
Most of the pollution in the River Tagus is
caused by organic waste. Industries, water treatment
stations, power stations, domestic sewage and
industrial, dump wastes on the river. However,
other factors also contribute to the pollution of the
River Tagus, such as wastes of heavy metals,
radioactive substances and polluted affluents like
Trancão river. When toxic substances enter in water
bodies, they get dissolved or lie suspended in water
or get deposited on the bed. This results in the
pollution of water.

10. Consequences of pollution
Pollution has a detrimental effect on any living
organism in an environment, making it virtually
impossible to sustain life. This effects are not only
devastating to people but also to animals. The most
polluted area is the River Tagus estuary. It is a serious
problem because this area is habited by many
wildlife species that consume polluted water, getting
sick and may even die.

12. Pollution control
At Expo 98, there was a concern with the quality
of the river water and proceeded to clean up. There
was money, techniques and options that allow it to
be a successful project. It was just for clean up the
Loures municipality, but later some municipalities of
Tagus Valley were also added to the project to clean
up. However, disagreements meant that the project
was never completed. There are also ETARs that
prevent pollution of Tagus.
