       A Guide for Upper
          Elementary
           Students
Today we will:
       • Learn about a
         community called
         cyberspace

       • Learn about staying
         safe in cyberspace
What is a community ?
• A group of people Can you think of
who share the same some examples?
  or a common
  interest
What is CYBERSPACE?
          • Cyberspace contains
            places to visit, just
            like a real community.
            It is the Internet.

          • The Internet
            includes:
             – Web sites
             – Email accounts
Website Examples

        • Web 2.0 tools
        • Research sites
        • Social
          networking sites
        • Gaming site
        • Google Docs
•Places in a community are identified by
          their ADDRESSES

What is the school‟s address ?
The Internet is a
            community,
connecting users worldwide.
Web sites have addresses called URL‟s

     When you see:

.com the information is from a commercial site

.edu the information is from an educational site

.org the information is from an organization

.gov the information is from a government site

community by parents or teachers, that
help keep help to keep you safe?

  and laws Wear your seatbelt.
Look both ways when you cross the
                              street.
Q: If cyberspace is a
 community, who are
 its citizens?

A: YOU! Every time
  you go on the
  Internet, you are a
  cyber citizen in the
  cyber community.
Cyber Safe
• Cyber citizens in the cyber community
need rules to keep them safe just like
  in our school community.

• Does anyone have rules at home for
using the computer and the Internet?

Q: Who made A: Your parents! They want to
these rules? keep you safe in cyberspace and
help you be a good cyber citizen.
Digital Etiquette

• The cyber community , like other
communities, has a set of rules that
  everyone must follow.

• These rules make the cyber
  community a better place for
  everyone!

• Remember to •How do you think
be polite in people should act
  cyber in cyber
  communities! communities?

people online talk to people in
  remember these
  they can‟t see communities?
  your face..

The Golden Rule
• As a citizen of cyberspace you‟re
responsible for following the Golden Rule
• Never say anything to someone or about
someone that may be hurtful or unkind.
• Cyber Citizens that do this are called
  Cyber Bullies.

                 http://zmpm.com/issue05/
Protecting yourself from
       Cyber Bullies
• If somebody sends you a message
that makes you feel uncomfortable or
  unsafe do not respond.
• Let a trusted adult know.
Social Networking
• Email
• IM
• Chat room
• Game sites

                         www.kiwicommons.com
Staying Safe on the Internet
     at Home and at School
Never give out personal information such as:
• your name
• your password
• home address
• school name
• telephone number
• Also, never send a picture of yourself to someone you
chat with on the computer without your parent's
permission.
You decide!
One day, an 8 year old was playing a game on a fun
Web site his dad had helped him locate. But after
a few mouse clicks, she wasn‟t on the game site
anymore. She tried getting back to the game site
using the back arrows. It didn‟t work!

It was a different place that wasn‟t fun
anymore. The words made her feel uncomfortable.

What would you do?
Did you think to suggest that
she ask for help from a trusted
             adult?

That‟s the best thing to do!
• Sometimes a website is made so that it will not let
you exit or get out of it, no matter how much you
  click!It‟s not your fault.
• If you have been on the Internet before and know
about the „close box‟ in the corner of a web page,
  you can click that.
Staying Safe on the Internet Is
     Like Staying Safe in a
         Real Community

              • If you get “lost” on the
                Internet, or stumble into a
                Website not safe for you:

  -Talk to your parents
  - Find a trusted adult
  - Go to a teacher
Cyber Smart, Cyber Safe!

             Any Questions?
