http://bit.ly/n7KhJO What is the worst way to integrate technology in the classroom? Create a presentation with static content, turn on your video projector, dim the lights and …your kiddies will go straight into a coma. Instead use a tablet PC or graphics tablet - no extra work and really effective.
3. Static Content Presentation
What is the worst way to integrate technology in
the classroom?
• Create a presentation with static content
• Turn on your video projector
• Dim the lights and …
– Your kiddies will go straight into a coma
– Particularly in mathematics
4. Video Projectors and Dynamic Content
In this webinar we will look at two technologies
I use every day in my mathematics classroom.
However, these technologies work regardless
– Of the curriculum (program, subject) and
– Of the test (assessment method).
1. Writing in real-time and in color
2. Publishing the classes on the web
5. Video Projectors and Dynamic Content

Graphics Tablet
8" x 6" 20 cm x 15 cm
writing surface
~60 Euro
Tablet is wired (USB).
The pen is wireless
(AAA battery).

• How do I work in class?
I write as if I am at a blackboard using annotation
software for writing.
I open materials and use screen capture software to
copy and paste problems for solving.
I open subject-related freeware (such as GeoGebra)
and do on-the-fly constructions to illustrate the
process, algebraically and visually solve or even
just to check solutions.
7. Video Projectors and Dynamic Content
Publishing my classes on the web
• When I am done with class …
I simply
–print the annotation file to a pdf file.
–link to it via a ready-to-use link page.
–upload both to my website.

• Annotation software
– Microsoft Research InkSeine - freeware

us/um/redmond/projects/inkseine/install.html
– Microsoft Office OneNote
– Smart Notebook Software
(with SmartTech products, e.g. SmartBoard)
9. Video Projectors and Dynamic Content

• Screen capture software
– JING: freeware (does screencasts too)
http://www.techsmith.com/jing/
– SnagIt
http://www.techsmith.com/
(comes bundled with Camtasia Studio in an Academic License for <$200)

• FOSS Software
– GEOGEBRA: freeware
http://www.geogebra.org
– Scratch: freeware
http://scratch.mit.edu
(we have translated both into Macedonian)
11. Video Projectors and Dynamic Content
Writing in real-time and in color
• Enough static content!
Let's see some examples.
• I am sitting in front of the class with
– Laptop
– Graphics tablet
– Video projector
I am turned so that I can look right to see the
projection and left so I can see the class.
12. Video Projectors and Dynamic Content
Writing in real-time and in color
• Enough static content!
Let's see some examples.
• I am sitting in front of the class with
– Laptop

I am turned so that I can look right to see the

14. Video Projectors and Dynamic Content
Writing in real-time and in color
• Do example using Smart Notebook
– Annotate, Copy & Paste, Annotate,
– Calculate with Calculator, Check with GeoGebra
• Save, Print and Post
• If time, do example using OneNote
• If time, do example using InkSeine
15. Video Projectors and Dynamic Content
Writing in real-time and in color
More effective than chalkboard
• I can face my kids and write and talk so there is
direct interaction.
• If something is too small – I can move it, make it
bigger; the view-range is greater.
• Nothing is erased; I can refer back to any page.
• I can color code so relationships are clear.
16. Video Projectors and Dynamic Content
Writing in real-time and in color
More effective than chalkboard
• I can prepare images, problems ahead of time
and still talk and work in real-time.
• Dynamic technology is available at my fingertips
– every kind of software from an online
calculator up to dynamic mathematics
• I can publish my lessons in an easily accessible
format. My kids can check their notes.
17. Video Projectors and Dynamic Content
Writing in real-time and in color
More effective than static content
• It is frontal instruction (proven to be most
effective) plus you have technology.
• It is dynamic – students can ask questions; you
can solve problems to illustrate something that
comes up in class at that moment.
• I can give problems to the kiddies to work in
class and then put the answers in later so they
can check their work again at home.
18. Video Projectors and Dynamic Content
Writing in real-time and in color
More effective than static content
• It is cheap to integrate.
• There is no extra setup time.
Most important:
• If you write – the kiddies write.
If you do show & tell – the kiddies watch.
Writing improves understanding.
