Testimonial David and John, Google docs have been a great learning experience for my students and for me. So far, we have done some collaborative work with Core Literature groups, predicting events in the stories different groups are reading. Then we tried making power points in small groups—each person completing a slide on the Respiratory System. We had some problems inserting graphics/clip art into the power point presentations, but I think we figured it out. I’ll put you as able to share a couple of those, if you like. (after school today) Now, individuals are working on another document about the Alimentary Canal; to explain and describe an experiment done in class. Some students have done a lot of their work at home and that’s new for them. Next, I think we will be working on describing our Owl Pellet dissections and inserting some pictures we took and saved in Picasa. Hopefully, each project becomes a little more complex and more features are added. We are really enjoying the collaboration portion. Janetta

Notas do Editor

  1. (Be sure to bring computer speakers or a projector with good sound.)
  2. Welcome to Using Google Collaborative Tools in the Classroom. My name is John Lenhardt. I am an EdTech ITAF working as a liaison to Local District 8.   What are Google Collaborative Tools? They include (X) a word processor (X) speadsheet (X) presentation (X) calendar (X) web sites (X)
  3. Why Use Google Collaborative Tools? Let's take a look at a short video by Common Craft explaining the power of Google Collaborative applications.
  4. Let’s explore the different Google account types (X)  (X) and explain which Google accounts should be used by an LAUSD teacher interacting with students using Google collaborative tools.
  5. Google has four basic account types... (X)
  6. The first two are a Gmail account (X) and a Google account (X) Both accounts are nearly identical. (X) Both give access to Google collaborative applications. (X) The Gmail account provides email (X) but the Google account does not provide email allowing you to register ANY email with the account. The other accounts are Google’s corporate accounts or sometimes referred to as Teams accounts. (X) The first is Google Apps Standard Edition, which is free. (X) The last type is Google Apps Premier Edition which costs a company using it about $50 per user. Google offers the Premier Edition to education for free (X) under the name Google Apps Education Edition. (X) Both accounts a basically the same. (X) Both offer moderated or managed access to Google applications. (X) Email is provided for the standard edition (X) and the Education edition. (X) The standard edition (X) and the education edition allow for the use of personal domains or URLs. Besides being more powerful and reliable, the Premier or Education Edition (X) allows for access to a corporate directory or Single Sign-On for login identity. Since it is important for teachers working with students to communicate on a professional level it is recommended they register for a Google account and use their LAUSD.net email as their login. Students are provided District email from Google Apps Education and login using the custom Domain MyMail.lausd.net.
  7. The student login (X) using the Google Apps for Education account is on the left side of the screen. (X)   The teacher login (X) using a Google account has the login block on the right side of the screen.
  8. Early in 2009 the Local District 8 ITAF, David Kotkosky and I delivered this presentation to a couple of upper elementary and middle school teachers.  Three weeks later David requested an email explaining how the teachers were using Google Docs in their classroom (if at all) This is the email from Janetta Baker from Broad Ave. Elementary School.
