The Mayan Empire developed an advanced number system as early as 400 AD. They invented two calendars, one for religious purposes and another for agricultural use. Astronomy was also important to the Mayans as they made careful observations of the night sky and planets. Priests played a key role in Mayan society and government, ruling cities and overseeing religious ceremonies. Human sacrifice and offerings of blood to the gods were part of Mayan religious practices.
