- This is how the news about the resurrection of Jesus, the Messiah, sounded to some Greeks who heard apostle Paul spoke. Most of them thought this was impossible! A 'grandmother's story'! \n\n\n

- Some of the Christians at the church in Corinth also thought the same thing. Being influenced by other non-believing Greeks, they too lost faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ even though they were Christians who heard the gospel about Jesus, His death and His resurrection directly from apostle Paul.\n\nThis is the reason why apostle Paul wrote 1 Cor. 15. To teach and scold the church in Corinth of their unbelief and subsequent immoral activities due to their lack of faith in the resurrection. \n
- The resurrection is the core message that Pastor Lazarus, Teck Lee, and Sam have been speaking for the last few weeks as we approach Good Friday at Easter. They have been giving Sunday sermons on the teaching of the resurrection by apostle Paul from 1 Cor. 15. \n\nToday, my sermon is to wrap up all the weeks of teaching on the resurrection and summarize it before Good Friday and Easter in the coming week. \n
- There will be 7 major summary points from 1 Cor. 15. I am not going to talk about how we prove the resurrection to be true. That is for another sermon or bible study. I am just going to focus on the 7 major points from 1 Cor. 15 and in the end talk about how the resurrection affects our Christian faith. \n\n\n
- First of all, a bit of background. The church in Corinth was mainly made out of Greek believers. To the Greeks, the physical body was corrupted and goodness was found in the spiritual form. The body was a prison of the soul. So, for the Greeks, the physical bodily resurrection was not an acceptable idea to them because to be resurrected with a physical body means to be corrupted by evil again. \n
- The first point is found in verse 2.\n1 Cor 15:2 - salvation by holding on to our faith\nthrough which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you—unless you have come to believe in vain\n\nBefore the apostle talked about the resurrection, he spoke about the importance of the gospel which brought salvation to the church in Corinth. However, Paul warned them that the salvation through the gospel message only works if they continued to believe in it. It will not work if they chose to abandon it.\n\nBelieving the gospel is like a runner starting the race. You do not obtain the crown or a certificate of participation because you started the race. You get it when you finish the race while observing the rules of the race to avoid disqualification. The same goes for our faith. Salvation through the gospel message only works if we continue to believe in it. If we no longer believe in the gospel, than we are like the athlete who drops out from the race. (Salvation is not a decision made in the past, it is a decision made in the present. If the thief on the cross who believed chooses to deny Jesus moments later to get down from the cross to save his life, do you think he will still be in Paradise?)\n
- The second point is found in verses 3-4. \n1 Cor 15:3-4 - the resurrection is part of the gospel\nFor I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures\n\nLike Teck Lee has mentioned in his sermon weeks ago, the gospel is actually stated in these verses. The Gospel is about Christ, His death for our sins, and His resurrection according to the promises of God in the Old Testament. Therefore, the resurrection is vital to the gospel message. We cannot remove the resurrection from the gospel because it is part of the gospel message that brings salvation. If the resurrection is removed, the gospel no longer works and the salvation found in the gospel does not work as well. The resurrection of Jesus, our Lord is vital for Christian faith. (Do we speak of the resurrection when we preach the gospel?)\n
- 1 Cor 15:14, 17 - the resurrection is the focal point of the gospel\nand if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain\nif Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins\n\nThis is to reinforce the second point. The resurrection is the focal point of the gospel. Without the resurrection, the gospel does not work. Our faith will not work and there will be no salvation! The resurrection is the foundation in which our faith is built on. If God did not raise Jesus, then the Lord's death would be meaningless. He would not be the Messiah and Saviour. We will not have salvation if Jesus, our Lord, was not resurrected. The promises of God in the Old Testament would be broken. The cross will not work without the empty grave!\n
- 1 Cor 15:23 - the resurrection includes us\nBut each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ\n\n1 Cor 15:44 - the resurrection has a real body\nIt is sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual body\n\nThe good news is that just as Jesus, our Lord, was resurrected, so too will we be resurrected if we continue to believe. This will happen when the Lord returns to claim all things. We were discussing about what living in heaven will be like at our bible study on Friday. We talked about how the Bible does not give us a clear picture of us being in heaven after death. If you are interested to know about the topic, join the bible study. :-) \n\nBut one thing the Bible is very clear. In the end, you will have a resurrected physical body to live with God here on the new earth and not in heaven, enjoying all the things you wish you could do now on earth which you can't because of many reasons. Peace, security, health, relationships, nature, culture, knowledge, food, science, technology etc. God's eternal presence on earth will make the new earth heaven like. (Joke of the non-believer wanting to go to hell.)\n
- The fifth point is found in the book of Acts, chapter 17, verses 30-31.\nActs 17:30-31 - the resurrection proves that Jesus is God's appointed Judge\nWhile God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”\n\nThe resurrection is the proof that Jesus is who He claimed He is and who we claim He is as well. If God did not raise Jesus from the dead, then all the things and promises about Jesus would have been untrue. This also tell us that if God raised Jesus, then He will indeed be the Judge who will restore justice in the end and pronounce judgement on evil and His enemies. This means the resurrection of Jesus, our Lord, also points to the coming judgement which is why we, and we call others as well, to repent of our sinful ways, to believe in Jesus, receiving forgiveness and following Him. You see, without the resurrection, there will be no justice, no judgement, and no forgiveness. That is why the gospel message points most importantly to the resurrection of Jesus Christ.\n
- The sixth point is found in verse 32-33. \n1 Cor 15:32-33 - without resurrection, nothing is worthwhile, better to do evil\nIf with merely human hopes I fought with wild animals at Ephesus, what would I have gained by it? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals. Come to a sober and right mind, and sin no more; for some people have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.\n\nWithout the resurrection, there is actually nothing beyond death. Nothing will last after death and we will not exist after death. If so, then why should we be so silly to go through so much of difficulties in doing good in an unthankful world while following Christ? Why should we love our enemies, love one another and forgive one another if there is nothing else beyond death? Why not just hang loose and enjoy ourselves as long as we are not caught? Let us eat and drink for tomorrow we die, following the Chinese saying, "If there is wine today, drink and be drunk." Without the resurrection, everything will be meaningless and purposeless. Without the hope of the resurrection, we will abandon all moral grounds and live sinfully, causing pain to ourselves and others around us. (Wrath of Titans and Hades' fear)\n
- The final point is found in verse 58. \n1 Cor 15:58 - all that we do now will count in the resurrection, which is our faith's goal \nTherefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain\n\nIf without the resurrection, all things will be meaningless. Everything perishes after death. But with the resurrection, we have the hope and assurance that all the good works we do now in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ will last and be rewarded. More than that, we get to enjoy the fruit of our labours. Be reunited with our loved ones in the Lord and being able to continue to pursue all the good things and interest that God has set in our hearts now. The resurrection is the hope and the goal of our faith in Jesus Christ. (Quote Paul.)\n
- The resurrection is the proof that God had appointed Jesus as the Lord who will judge and restore justice for all man. It indicates that there will be a day of judgment and mankind is to turn away from their sins by responding to the good news of Jesus for forgiveness and for the power to live a life worthy of His acceptance or calling. Thus the resurrection of Jesus Christ is the starting point of our race of faith, to turn away from sins and to obey Him in doing what is right until the day of His coming judgment and our resurrection. \n\nThis obedience of faith shows that Jesus is indeed now Lord over our lives and His rule is established in our lives. In this way, Jesus, through us, is establishing the kingdom of God and has begun to put all other dominions under His feet. Through our obedience to His rule, other dominions are declared powerless. Thus, God's will and kingdom rule here on earth as it is in heaven. We are to live and establish the kingdom of God in Jesus' name and by His Spirit now and here on earth. We do not believe in order to wait for the kingdom of God to come and to live in heaven. That's not the reason why Jesus was raised. He was raised to show that He's the king and His kingdom has begun by the power of His Spirit working in our lives, in obedience of faith, making us His royal priesthood and chosen nation.\n\nThe conclusion of chapter 15 is this, there is reason for you to continue in your faith and to do what is right in the eyes of God because we will be resurrected and be judged to receive our rewards if we continue in our faith and good works.\n
