Critical thinking exercise 6
1. This is very much a true statement. The argument of gay or lesbian marriage or
relationships is still a hot button topic, especially in the south. This is just one example of a non-
traditional relationship standard. Another could be couples cohabitating before marriage which
isn’t as much a big deal in most places, though it is still frowned upon by earlier generations. The
fact is, things are changing and times are surely changing along with them. Society is changing
and gay marriage is becoming normal in some states, but there are still nay-sayers who disagree
with this aspect. They see gay marriage as morally wrong, instead of two people doing
everything that straight couples do with the exception of them both being of the same sex. The
generations coming up are more open-minded and accepting of gay marriage or as it will one day
be called, just marriage. However, some families will raise their children to not be accepting of
this, but perhaps the individual will decide for themselves whether it is moral or not for two
people of the same sex to get married. For example, my parents do not support gay marriage, but
I however, fully support it because of experiences in my life. You should be allowed to marry
whoever you want regardless if they are the same sex or not. It is up to the individual to decide
their stance on such matters. As for people living together before marriage, it is slowly becoming
a norm. However, many parents will disagree with this and think that it shouldn’t happen before
marriage. It is becoming a social norm however. It is up to the individual ultimately to decide to
defy the traditional views of relationships or stay in the traditional norms of relationships. It
varies by individual, but they can be influenced by society.
