38. Locals Raced for Women’s Wellness
Broward Health Coral Springs Medical Center (CSMC) recently held its 5th
Annual Race for Women’s Wellness where over 250 participants raised
more than $15,000 for the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund. The fund
provides free mammograms, breast imaging and biopsies to women
who otherwise would not be able to afford to get them.
Participants ranged from cancer patients and survivors to those who
carry the cause near to their hearts. One special participant was Lisa
Boccard, the namesake of the fund created in her honor by her brother
Vince Boccard and his wife Terry. As Lisa continues her fight against
breast cancer, she’s honored that her fund helps others. “The participants
in this event gave Coral Springs Medical Center an opportunity to do
something extraordinary for women in need,” said Lisa.
With a mission to raise awareness and money to fight against breast
cancer, the race itself was created five years ago by two doctors from
CSMC—Dr. Mark Shachner, Medical Director of the Women’s Diagnostic
& Wellness Center, and Dr. David Silver, a gastroenterologist. The
Boccards later joined CSMC to continue its mission in providing women
in financial need in Northwest Broward County the ability to receive
proper breast medical care including
early detection screenings. For more

On February 6, Governor Charlie Crist toured Coral Springs’
brand new Fire Station 80. He got a first-hand look at what
Station 80 has to offer. The first being an ecologically friendly
building built with fiscally responsible taxpayers dollars that will 2
improve the department’s response times. At 13,400 sq. ft., with
four apparatus bays, and housing a Battalion Chief, an Advanced
Life Support Fire Engine, an Advanced Life Support Rescue
Truck, and much more, this place is amazing. Construction was
completed ahead of schedule and under budget. Centrally
located in CS, Station 80, also known to the firefighters as Grand
3
Central Station, is the city’s busiest already.
Over 100 people, including local elected officials, attended the
ribbon cutting later that afternoon dedicating the first building
in the city to receive the Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) Certification and the first Fire Station in So. Florida
to meet this standard. The U.S. Green Building Council gives this 4
certification only to buildings that meet strict environmental
criteria. Students from Taravella High School’s Prostart Culinary
Program were on-hand to cater the event. For more info, contact

chemicals in the old-process and worked with partner Sharon Gibson, a
20-year beauty industry professional, to formulate this special blend of
Keratin and Collagen to address the requests of both stylists and clients.
This new process offers shorter application time, less frizz and curl,
added volume and bounce, and the hair can be shampooed the very
next day! Plus no unpleasant fumes
or odors. Hair is not greasy, will not Before
be left flat and weighed down and

44. How a Piece of Jewelry can Change Your “Life”
Have you ever thought you could create an item that actually helps
people and changes your own life in the process? Jackie Kaufman,
Parkland resident, designer and jewelry caster from Rock My World, Inc.
has. Two years ago, as a special request from a customer she created
the Heart Fingerprint Necklace actually taking two fingerprints from a
customer and creating a sterling silver heart necklace using a special
jewelry casting process. It was such a great success, she decided to add
it to her list of online items.
What happened next was shocking. Requests started coming in from all
over the world, but requests she was not expecting. And in the process,
Jackie was overwhelmed by the stories she was hearing. One woman
whose child passed away wanted her and her child’s prints together on
one heart so they could be close forever. An elderly caretaker who had a
dying patient that she loved, wanted both of their prints on a necklace.
A child whose parents died within one week of each other wanted her
parents prints together, to give to each child in the family. A woman who
had a heart transplant, wanted one to give to her heart donor family. An
army wife whose husband was going overseas, wanted one so he could
hang it on his dog tag. The stories were endless.
Of course the necklace is done for many happy occasions like Mother’s
Day, Birthdays, Weddings and Baby Shower Gifts. What’s more
sentimental than a mother wearing her children’s fingerprints around
her neck, or a bride and groom having their prints made as a wedding
gift, with the date engraved on the back? Jackie has done them all and
has been touched by being able to help
people through crisis with her little piece
of inspired jewelry.
When she makes each necklace, by hand,
she runs her fingers over the prints to get a
feel for the person and the life they’ve led.
She usually knows the history behind each
necklace and it can get quite emotional.
Working in conjunction with hospice
hospitals and funeral homes across the
country, Jackie has been creating lasting
memories for people . For more info on the 1

46. 10th Anniversary Celebration for Grooming
Gallery of Coral Springs
It’s a dog’s “Life”!! It’s no secret Coral Springs and Parkland residents are
mad about their pets!!! Just ask Pamy Leto, who’s celebrating her 10th
anniversary as the proud owner of Grooming Gallery in Coral Springs
which she started in 2000 with the beloved Dr. Steven Paul. Loved by
many locals, the Grooming Gallery is a member of The National Dog
Groomers Association of America and specializes in both dogs and cats.
And Pamy herself is a devout animal lover, rescuing all of her own pets:
a Weimeraner “Patton,” a little Lab mix “Harley” which she literally found
wandering around all by herself on Rock Island Road, a Mancoon mix
cat “Zola” and a Siamese field mix “Hummer.” Pamy believes in giving her
clients a special touch after they’ve been groomed: they all leave with a
scarf or bow just like a present going back home to their mommy and
daddy. To celebrate her 10th anniversary Grooming Gallery is offering
$5 off Full Grooming for new customers and a Summer Special: FREE
Teeth Brushing just by mentioning that Parkland/CS Life Magazine sent
you. Pamy has sponsored the
“pawcasso” booth for dogs and
children for three years in a
row at an event benefiting the
Coral Springs Museum of Art.

Local Girl Collects “Bear Hugs and
Bandages” for Children in Haiti
Amanda Straus is a remarkable 9-year-old from Coral Springs who knows
that one person can make a difference! When she heard about the tragedy
in Haiti she realized that children were alone, hurt, and very sad, so she
decided to collect stuffed animals and bandages. Amanda reached out
to Rabbi Jonathan Kaplan and Hebrew School Director, Phyllis Lasky, at
Temple Beth Chai, where she and her family attend, and they were very
supportive of this “mitzvah.” The Hebrew school dedicated an entire day
to making cards for the families of Haiti and posters to help advertise the
collection. Amanda also asked Mrs. Rashid, her school Principal at Eagle
Ridge Elementary if she could put a collection box at the school as well.
With the support of her family, temple, friends, and school, Amanda
collected over 1,100 stuffed animals and over $500 worth of bandages
and supplies! Thanks to the kindness and connections of Detective John
Jensen of the Ft. Lauderdale Police Dept, these supplies will be delivered
to local orphanages, surviving schools, and will also be handed out in
the tent cities in Haiti.
In Amanda’s words, “I know this will make the people of Haiti happy!
It’s not about how many stuffed animals or bandages we’ve collected,
it’s about how happy
they’re gonna be when
they get them!”

47. Coral Springs Medical
Center Marks its 100th
Procedure Using the
da Vinci ®Si™Robotic
Surgical System by Local
Obstetrician/Gynecologist
Dr. Fern Taisenchoy-Bent
Last summer Coral Springs Medical Center
(CSMC) became the first and only hospital in
Broward County to acquire robotic surgery
capabilities for patients needing a prostatectomy
or a hysterectomy. Since then, surgical specialists
at CSMC have performed its 100th procedure
using the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System.
Previously, all surgeries were performed “open,”
where an incision was made in the body large
enough for the surgeon to plainly see—and
insert his or her hands into the surgical field.
The large incisions that open surgery required
caused pain, increased risk of infection, and
extended recovery time.
With the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System, the same
complex surgeries are performed but through
tiny surgical openings with high-definition 3D
vision. This allows surgeons’ hand movements
to be scaled, filtered and translated into precise
movements within the operative site. The benefits
to the patients typically include less blood loss,
less chance of infection, a shorter hospital stay,
less pain, less scarring, and faster recovery.
Less than a year ago, Dr. Boniface Ndubisi, CSMC
gynecologic oncologist performed the first
surgery—a laparoscopic hysterectomy—using
the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System. The 100th
procedure—a hysterectomy—was performed
by local obstetrician/
gynecologist Dr. Fern
Taisenchoy-Bent. For
