Sara Huws and Dayfdd James, Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales; Jenny Kidd, Cardiff University; Allie John, Yellobrick Through their newly launched programme ‘Traces – Olion’, the National Museum Wales Digital Media Team, with Cardiff University, are challenging how visitors experience St Fagans National Museum of History and its collections. Using non-linear storytelling, interweaving experiences and performance, Traces – Olion uses a mix of fact and fiction to communicate its message. The team will talk about their experiences and reflect on what it means for ‘trusted’ organisations to blur the lines of truth.

My work describes creative methods to improve the holistic user experience of student visitors. Since 2012, I am chairing the “Take5” committee that creates and facilitates positive, stress-relieving initiatives, activities and events at Kennedy Library. Fostering new engagement strategies and creative outreach methods, we are helping students to manage and reduce excessive stress, particularly in preparation for and during examination periods. The presentation focuses on opportunities and challenges of this established public program. Going beyond the physical and virtual user experience, we cater to the whole student and apply integrated strategies to improve mental wellbeing of the library’s visitors. Often, people associate UX directly with user interfaces or other digital experiences. I would like to spark conversations that re-focus the field of UX on holistic experiences. Airports, universities and libraries are exploring animal-assisted interventions to foster engagement and help with stress relief. My example from our academic library will help attendees to understand the program and real-world outcomes. I believe that many facilities recognize the benefits of public programs like Take5, but don't know where to start or imagine high costs associated with organizing events. My presentation will help to understand how easy it is to start the program, and what the potential outcomes can be. While it's hard to base the outcomes on quantitative data, I can share qualitative results from our research at Kennedy Library.

Curio is a mobile app designed in partnership with Art Processors, the creative team behind MONA’s ‘O’ and launched in April 2013 at the State Library of NSW. Curio uses a unique indoor location technology which is incredibly accurate and the app is easy to install for both iOS and Android devices. The innovative mobile interface knows where you are inside the State Library and intuitively delivers interesting facts, surprising stories and multimedia about the objects and architectural features around you. The mobile experience goes far beyond the traditional audio guide, streaming informative content without disturbing the heritage building. It offers an interactive experience that allows visitors to rate objects on site. They can then play back their visit at home and share their favourite objects on Facebook and Twitter. Megan Perry is the Manager of Learning Services at the State Library of NSW. She has managed the roll out of a range of K-12 learning programs using new technologies to engage learners onsite, online and on tour. Programs include video conferences across the state and internationally, the use of iPads in learning programs, and learning app development. Megan is currently managing the development of web-based learning resources for the NSW History and English syllabuses for the Australian Curriculum. Megan is a member of the National and State Libraries Australasia Literacy and Learning Project Group. Louise Prichard has recently taken up the position of Project Manager, Web and Online System Integration, Digital Excellence Program. In her previous role of Web Coordinator, she coordinated work across the State Library website and recently project managed the Library’s new Curio app, launched in April this year. She is also a member of the National and State Libraries Australasia Community-Created Content Group which organised the Library Hack competition and Mash-up at the Mitchell.

Join an interdisciplinary panel of museums and dive into a session devoted to early learners and strategies to work with these youngest visitors (and their families) in a variety of settings and subjects. Each institution will share successes in their content area, and participants will walk away with a set of new strategies and tools to use with their own early learners.

Working together with students as co-creators of exhibitions and content in the Museum can produce a rich source of creativity, critical thinking and ultimately an ‘other’ voice for the public to hear about issues facing them and wider society. In today’s increasingly participatory Museum environment there is the need to be more inclusive of audience voices. In particular, is the importance of championing the student voice and the opportunities that exist for greater collaboration. Students need to feel that they have a voice in order to participate and engage in the complex world around them. Museums, through their exhibitions and programs have the opportunity to more effectively collaborate with students and education stakeholders and provide them with a platform to express their feelings and aspirations in a critical and creative way. The Powerhouse Museum has enjoyed a long history of student-based exhibition which have gone on to become permanent fixtures, such as the annual DesignTECH exhibition, showcasing the best of the state’s Major Design Projects. The Museum is working more extensively to provide the public with an ‘other’ voice not always heard in public forums, such as evidenced with the recent 2012 Koori Art Expressions exhibition, in which students from years K-12 have produced artworks in response to this year’s NAIDOC theme – The Tent Embassy. The reason why this initiative is significant is that the education audience are key Museum stakeholders, which in many instances are an untapped resource of creativity and critical thinking which can be harnessed through working together more effectively. The motivation to further champion this student voice is recognising the transformative role of students as future agents of change, through fostering these critical and creative skills. Many people say not to work with animals or children however this presenter disagrees altogether with the latter. This presentation will provide delegates with an insight into what has worked at the Museum in collaborating with students and education stakeholders to produce exhibitions and content as well as highlight some of the challenges which exist.
