![The Internet<br />“The Internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow.” Bill Gates<br />What is the internet?<br />A global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols<br />What is a Search Engine?<br />A program for the retrieval of data from a database or network, esp. the Internet<br />(June 2011 Stats) Google Search in the US Alone: 10.9 Billion (Total of all: 16.7 Billion)<br />(June 2011 Stats) In the top visited US Sites Google is second most visted<br />How do I use Search Engines?<br />Common search engines: ask.com, yahoo.com, google.com, msn.com, bing.com & more<br />Search Tips:<br />When using your favourite search engine you may want to find something very specific out.<br />Definitions – define:[item]<br />e.g. define: search (definition of search)<br />Specific Site – site:[site url excluding www] [item] <br />e.g. site:search.com carrot (searching for carrot on www.search.com)<br />Specific Phrase – “[item]”<br />e.g. “to be or not to be” (finds that shakespear quote)<br />Track Flight Status – [airline] [flight number]<br />e.g. kulula kh4562<br />Convert (currency,weight,etc) – [item] in [item to convert to]<br />e.g. 10 US dollars in South African Rand<br />Time – [What time is it] [location]<br />e.g. what time is it in hong kong<br />Using Email:<br />Email is something the majority of internet users know and use. This is something most of us are familiar with are fairly adept in the knowledge of the email program or site we use.<br />Types of email Mediums:<br />Domain Based: This is typically email addressed used by companies that want the email addresses on the same domain as their website. This gives a more professional image when communicating.<br />e.g. if the website is www.website.com, the email addresses will be [user]@website.com<br />Webmail (Web Based Email): These are email services accessed via website like Google Mail, Yahoo Mail, Windows Live Mail, etc.<br />e.g. accounts at Google would look like this [user]@gmail.com<br />(June 2011 Stats) Google Mail, Yahoo Mail and Windows Live Mail all appear in the Top 10 most visited sites in the US<br />Note: domain based emails often have their own webmail aswell<br />What you should not email:<br />,[object Object]](https://image.slidesharecdn.com/theinternet-110726084528-phpapp01/85/The-Internet-Speaker-Notes-1-320.jpg)
