3. Past progressive…
Subject + was/were + (verb) –ing
In 1912, the Titanic was sailing on the Atlantic Ocean.
People were traveling on the Titanic.
• Focuses on the duration of time
• We often mention a specific past time
• Talks about an event that was happening or in
progress in the past
Example: at 12:30, what were you doing?

4. Past time clause:
• while goes with past progressive in a time clause.
– While I was eating lunch, my phone rang.
– Jenny saw me when I was shopping at Hy-Vee.
while
• OR!
– My phone rang while I was eating lunch.
– While I was shopping at Hy-Vee, Jenny saw me.

5. What happened?
past progressive
In 1912, the Titanic was sailing
the Atlantic Ocean.
The Titanic hit an iceberg.
simple past

6. Simple past:
• Shows a past event was finished.
• An action stopped or interrupted another
action.
– He was running. He fell.

7. What happened?
past time clause
The Titanic hit an iceberg
WhenThe Titanic hit an iceberg.
In 1912, the Titanic was sailing the Atlantic Ocean when it hit an iceberg.
People were traveling on the Titanic when it hit an iceberg.
When the Titanic hit an iceberg in 1912, it was sailing the Atlantic Ocean.
