This document summarizes the five-year LASI (Least Access States Initiative) project run by Provide, an organization committed to expanding access to safe abortion. The project worked to improve abortion access in states with the most restrictive laws through data-driven planning, implementation of interventions, and building commitment and capacity among organizations and institutions. Over five years, the project established a more robust infrastructure for reproductive health and abortion work in program states. It also achieved gains in abortion access that can be replicated in other restrictive states. The document shares lessons learned from trying innovative approaches to expanding access in very difficult conditions.

Lessons from LASI
What we’ve learned from work
ing on abortion access
in the most restrictive state
s
A BUNCH OF OTHER THINGS
FOREWARD
This document is about the
five-year experience of the
largest and most experiment
al project that Provide has ever
done — LASI, the Least Acces
s States Initiative.
10. riven assessment and plannin
g, and implementation of key
interventions to improve access.
Over those five years, we built
commitment and capacity at
individual and
institutional levels - includi
ng among those that have not
previously
addressed abortion - in least
access states. Overall, this has
resulted in
1)
a more robust and still growi
ng infrastructure in
program states for work on
reproductive health and
abortion; and
2)
gains in abortion access that
can be replicated and
brought to scale in these and
other states, by Provide
and other organizations.
We would like to share some
stories about the work that
we’ve done as well as
the lessons we’ve learned in
the process. This project was
a radical shift for
Provide and we learned so
much from a willingness to
try anything that might
work; it is our hope that there
are lessons and stories here
that may help
others doing similar work.
PROVIDE
Provide is committed to acces
s to safe abortion for all wome
n
in the U.S.
We believe that by being clearly
focused on abortion within
the context of our
broader values we will make
a significant contribution to
women’s health and
autonomy.
NEED DESIGN?
To this end, Provide:
Looks for gaps in abortion access
that no one else is addressing
and
seeks to create and suppor
t innovative responses to these
gaps;
Seeks to catalyze changes within
health care and reproductive
health
activism that increase the particip
ation of a wide range of health
care providers in providing
and connecting women to safe
abortion
care; and
Works with local partners to
achieve locally-driven, locallyrelevant
goals and connects this work
to national organizations also
interested in expanding access.
