Filippo Brunelleschi and Michelangelo were influential Renaissance artists known for their sculptures and architecture. Brunelleschi is most famous for designing the dome of Florence Cathedral, which he built using innovative engineering techniques. Michelangelo was a versatile artist who worked in many mediums, including his famous sculptures of David and the Pietà. Both artists received commissions from the powerful Medici family and worked on projects to fortify the city of Florence, though Brunelleschi focused more on architecture and invention while Michelangelo concentrated on painting and sculpture.

Notas do Editor
Always had artistic gifts, used to goldsmith fancy and intricate designs
Florence competition – design gold wings for church doors and lost to Ghiberti
Obsessed with domes!! Climbed, studied, drew and sculpted the Pantheon constantly
Ended up using egg method for all architechtural works….domes, arches, entryways etc.
This is the piece Brunelleschi created when he lost to Ghiberti in the chuch door competition-VERY similar…
Ghiberti won because there was more drama…Ghiberti’s shows that you don’t know if he will kill or not while the other had showed they had been stopped
Donatello had asked Brunelleschi to look at one of his works and Brunelleschi had asked how he figured on making Christ, Donatello told him you merely think of what Christ would have looked like and sculpt yourself. So Brunelleschi did, and end up looking very similar to Donatello’s
Had 4 brothers as well
His mother was very sick and because of that sickness, Michelangelo was placed with a family of stonecutters. Also benefitted sculpting
When he studied with the medicis it benefitted his sculptures and allowed him to put more detail into his works
Mary holding Jesus after his death
You can see the look of sorrow and care on her face for her child
Inventor: ‘bastions’ walls around the city
Sistine Chapel…painted upside down
Layered clothing and hair was the style of the age
Anatomy…brought gay rumors
Pulleys…like a modern day crane
Michelangelo had been commissioned to create a male statue in order to enhance the dome
