Our prospective students are a digital savvy generation who are short of time but big on communication. Their experiences of our universities are formed earlier in the cycle and are enhanced by the authentic messaging and connections made through peer-to-peer interactions. Digital developments have made it easier to establish and manage an effective peer network run by student ambassadors and peer mentors. This session looks at how to deliver a first-class prospect experience, the impact of a successful pre-arrival community on induction and welcome week and into to post-enrolment retention.

Design Diversity, an initiative of Kent State University's Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC), is currently developing a tool for guiding short and long term actions toward creating more diverse and culturally relevant design communities. The Design Diversity Index is a tool for gauging the numbers and percentages of people of color in academic programs and professional careers in architecture, landscape architecture, graphic design, and related design disciplines in Ohio. Made possible through the support of The George Gund Foundation, the Index will measure current baseline conditions and annual progress toward expanding racial diversity in the design professions. It will provide a model that can be adopted in other communities and will also link to established national efforts to promote diversity in design.

Speaker: Ruth Drysdale, senior co-design manager, Jisc. It is anticipated that, within 20 years, 90% of jobs will require digital skills, so it’s important that universities and colleges are in a good position to prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s workplace. Understanding how students use technology and their attitudes towards its use in learning is a good place to start. As universities and colleges are investing large sums of money into their digital environment, how do we know if this investment is being realised by staff and students using the technology effectively? In this hands-on workshop, delegates will have the opportunity of using tools and resources to support them with gathering evidence of how staff and students are using technology.
