The Davis Cup has us thinking about
tennis in Canada, and where we stand
on the global tennis stage. We also got
to watch some incredible tennis up
close. Seeing those thundering serves
from Milos, the otherworldly speed and
relentless attack of Tsonga, the
brilliantly precise doubles play, the
showboating of Monfils live and

25. 16 SECOND CURE
In tennis, time management is critical to success. To keep your cool, and stay on top of things, you
have to give yourself a moment to pause, and plan the next step. And when you have a routine to
return to between points, it makes it that much easier to use your time to your advantage.
1 | POSITIVE RESPONSE
Immediately after a point, make some kind of
positive gesture. Straighten your posture, pump
your fist – anything to help you let go and focus
on what’s next and you can do it.

Celebrate a hundred more
years of fun at the PNE.
Posted with the support
of the City of Vancouver.
www.pne.ca
The PNE’s 100th Anniversary couldn't have fallen in a more
exciting year in the city. “We started the year as the 2010 Olympic
Winter Games venue for short-track speed skating and figure
skating, we welcomed the BC Lions to the new temporary stadium
on-site at Empire Field, and we closed out the summer by throwing
an amazing 17-day party celebrating our 100th Anniversary,” says
PNE President and CEO Mike McDaniel.
A celebration years in the making
“Every British Columbian has a special PNE memory – first job,
first date, first concert or special time with family and friends – and
we knew we had to tap into that psyche,” says Shelley Frost, PNE
Vice President of Marketing. An integrated and multi-faceted
campaign focused on this concept.
The campaign needed to appear fresh and current and focused
on providing moments of fun and celebration. “What better way
to say it than that we were celebrating 100 years of fun?” says
Kim Madu, PNE’s Director of Marketing. The 100Years of Fun
concept was built on the pillars that formed the foundation of all
the great moments on-site – fun, music, sports, family and rides.
It was brought to life with a new logo, which was integrated into
everything the PNE did.
To launch the Fair with a bang, several marquee events were
produced, generating buzz before the 100th Anniversary Fair
even opened. These included a return of the iconic PNE parade
with over 2,000 performers, large inflatables, appearances by
Dal Richards, Mayor Gregor Robertson and former Miss PNEs.
On opening day, the PNE kicked off the Fair with the biggest
concert event of the summer, featuring a four-hour outdoor
performance by the Beach Boys and BC’s own Bryan Adams.
Bringing fun to life
The core of the 100th Anniversary campaign ran throughout
the spring and summer of 2010. It included a new website
design plus TV and radio spots that took people through
the generational memories of the PNE, with every aspect of
the campaign designed to invite people to come celebrate
the 100th Anniversary at the Fair at the PNE in August. This
campaign was supported through merchandise, a community
street team, a mascot,TV, radio, outdoor, print, online, contesting,
and mobile and social media, and included both mainstream and
ethnic media.Web traffic almost tripled from the same period the
year before. Other unique consumer touchpoints included:
• A 100th Anniversary collector's cup in the shape of 1-0-0.
• A commemorative book chronicling the history of the PNE
over 10 decades.
• A “wrap” around the Pacific Coliseum of 40-foot exterior
banners that could be seen from the North Shore.
• A free PNE iPhone app, so that guests could tailor their
experience, which was downloaded by more than 3,600 users
in its first few weeks of availability.
CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF FUN
In British Columbia, not many brands – and even fewer non-profit organizations –
make it to the 100-year mark. There is no handbook on how to celebrate such a
magnificent milestone. The Pacific National Exhibition (PNE), on the cusp of a bright
new century, wanted to celebrate with creativity and fun, looking forward to the
future while still respecting the organization’s past, showing that they weren't just
100 years old, but they were 100 years strong.
• Throughout August, daily tweets were sent out,
celebrating great moments in PNE history.
• A strong email campaign resulted in open and click-
through rates higher than industry standard. An online
contest called the 100th Anniversary Awards invited
people to vote for their favourite PNE attraction, show,
food or event from over the years. This contest resulted
in a 20% increase in the PNE email database.
• Leveraging their agricultural roots, the PNE partnered
with Meadows Maze to have the 100th Anniversary
theme cut into their corn maze. All summer, visitors to
the maze wove their way through mini-donuts, roller
coasters and pinwheels.
• A 100th Anniversary mascot and street team attended
over 30 local community events.
The “100 years of fun” brand was embraced by the
entire company. Human Resources launched new 100th
Anniversary uniforms for all staff, concessionaires
proudly displayed the logo on their booths, hot dogs and
hamburgers were wrapped in custom “100 years of fun”
paper and local storefronts had windows painted with
their favourite PNE anniversary memory.
Results
In 2010, the PNE generated the highest total revenue ever,
exceeding $50 million for the first time in their history.
The 2010 Fair at the PNE was the largest and best-
attended ticketed event in BC with over 937,000 guests;
this is in comparison to attendance levels in the 700–800s
during the years of uncertainty when people thought that
the PNE was moving.Though some tourist attractions
were down 20–40% in 2009 and 2010, the PNE
showed growth in attendance of 9.7% in 2010.
On-site research showed that 93% of attendees were
aware of the PNE’s 100th Anniversary and 65% were
somewhat or greatly influenced by the anniversary
in their decision to attend. Because the PR team
custom-pitched media, the PNE received an astounding
$13 million in earned media coverage during 2010.
Data from an economic impact study conducted in
2010 showed that the PNE’s 100th Anniversary Fair
brought an economic impact of over $40 million to the
city of Vancouver and an impact of over $54 million
across BC, proving that the thrill of rides, dazzling
shows, fluffy ducklings and mini-donuts still draws
families and friends together, 100 years later.
The rejuvenated image and reconnection with guests
helped change perceptions, feed the public consultation
process and provide the necessary support for City
Council, in December 2010, to approve a new 25-year
$250 million redevelopment plan for Hastings Park that
would allow the PNE business to grow and thrive into
the next century.
