2. Social Learning Theory
 The Social Learning Theory states
that people learn from one
another via observation, imitation
and modeling.
 It is often referred to as a bridge
behaviorist and cognitive learning
theories because it encompasses
attention, memory and
motivation.

3. Albert Bandura
 The Social Learning Theory was
proposed by Albert Bandura.
 Bandura believed that direct
reinforcement could not account
for all types of learning.
 His theory added a social element,
arguing that people can learn new
information and behaviors by
watching other people which is
known as observational learning
(or modeling).

4. Necessary conditions for effective
modeling:
 Attention — various factors increase or decrease the
amount of attention paid.
 Retention — remembering what you paid attention to.
 Reproduction — reproducing the image.
 Motivation — having a good reason to imitate.

5. There are 3 core concepts of the
Social Learning Theory:
 People can learn through observation.
 Internal mental state is essential in the
learning process.
 Learning does not necessarily lead to
change in behavior.

6. What do teacher do under this
theory ?
 To promote effective modeling a teacher must make sure that
the four essential conditions exist; attention, retention , motor
reproduction, and motivation.
 Teachers must model appropriate behaviors and take care that
they do not model inappropriate behaviors.
 Teachers should expose students to a variety of other models.
This technique is especially important to break down traditional
stereotypes.
 Teachers should help students set realistic expectations for
their academic accomplishments.

7. What do students do under this
theory?
 Students often learn a
great deal simply by
observing other people.
 Students must believe
that they are capable of
accomplishing school
tasks.
 Students should closely
observe appropriate
behaviors and learn from
them.

8. I believe this theory will work well
in my classroom. I support leading
by example and as educator I feel
it is important to model
appropriate behaviors for the
students to observe and imitate.
