Twitter is a microblogging service that enables users to post messages ‘tweets’ of up to 140 characters. Users are responding to this questions: What are you doing? What’s happening? by a tweet that looks similar to a text message. The fascinating thing about twitter is that it’s instant and captures what’s happening out there that people find important.
Your network might consist of friends, people you don’t know personally but your friends know, people you trust, organisations like newspapers, schools, museums, tv channels, famous people like singers. I will elaborate more in the next slides. the 140 characters may look like a big constraint and you might think ‘My goodness, what to say in 140 characters’ but this is precisely quite fascinating, ‘creativity comes from constraint’.
First your status update is called ‘tweet’ you have people you are following and people who follow you. Following and followers. A user can follow others and see their tweets but the other user need not reciprocate. In other words, you are following someone, but it’s not necessary that he follows you back and vice versa. Or you might follow someone/organisations that is not your follower. Important: only people/organisations that follow you are able to see your live tweet stream, you are able to see the stream of the people you follow only! Very important actions you can do on Twitter are: reply to someone @ch_koula for example or if you don’t want your followers to see your msg then you can send a direct msg D ch_koula. If you like someone’s tweet and you want to share it with your network then you RT that tweet. Show examples.
This is how the home page of my account looks like. Twitter pages show all of their tweets in reverse chronological order. There is no ability to comment on individual posts. Some basic features. The central feature of twitter is this one, a stream of tweets posted by those they follow, listen in reverse chronological order.
I will show some of the features by logging in to my account.
This is how my profile looks like. User profiles are minimal and usually public. All my tweets are there in reverse chronological order. I can see my favourites, followers, following and my lists.
Users have different strategies for deciding who they follow. Some follow thousands, while others follow few. Some follow only people they know in person, while others follow celebrities and strangers they find interesting.
