Paris is located along the Seine River in northern central France. Some of its most famous landmarks include the Eiffel Tower, built for the 1889 World's Fair and now a symbol of the city; the Arc de Triomphe, commissioned by Napoleon to honor French victories; and Notre Dame Cathedral, completed in 1253 as one of the early Gothic churches in Paris. Other notable sites are the Louvre museum, originally a Renaissance palace that later became an art museum, and the Orsay museum which was transformed from an old train station housing many Impressionist works.
