Today we will be making an
electromagnet
This is what our Electromagnet will look like.
We will use Iron Nails
Enameled Copper Wire
Batteries
Paper Clips: they will be picked up with our
magnets we make.
An Electromagnet Has
● 1. A power source (we are using a battery)
● 2. A conductor (we are using a wire)
● 3. A core (we are using an iron nail)
● The Paper Clips will help us measure the
strength of our magnet.
Steps
● When you get your supplies, wind your copper wire around
the nail 5 times. This is called five “turns.”
● Connect the ends of your copper wire to each end of the
battery.
● You now have an electromagnet.
● Again, your electromagnet will look like this,
Your Electromagnet, your copper wire has
five turns.
Use Your Magnet
● Try to pick up paper clips. How many paper clips will your
magnet pick up?
● Write down how many paper clips your magnet picked up
with five turns(winds).
● Five Turns =_____________paper clips.
Now wind or turn
your copper wire TEN
times around your nail
Your Electromagnet Still Looks Like This,
Now With TEN turns.
Ten Turns
How many paper clips can your magnet pick up NOW?
Write it down.

Unwind Your Copper Wire
Unwind your copper wire.
Then wind your copper wire
around your nail ONLY TWICE.
That is TWO TIMES!

We Made a Small Electromagnet Today Using
● 1. A power source ( a battery)
● 2. A conductor ( an enameled copper wire)
● 3. A core (an iron nail).
● We measured its strength by seeing how many paper clips
it could pick up.
We Learned
●The more turns =
the stronger the
magnet.
● We saw that with more turns made to the wire, the stronger
our magnet became.
