 The nervous system
coordinates and controls
the body by receiving
information through
sensory
receptors, analyzing the
information, and
ordering the body to
respond.

3. Nervous System Suffixes
 The following are two suffixes mentioned in Chapter
12:
 -esthesia
 -plegia

4. -Esthesia
 Definition: capacity for sensation or feeling.
 Common words:
 Anesthesia
 Hyperesthesia
 Paresthesia

5. Anesthesia
 One of the more
recognizable words with
the suffix –esthesia.
 Meaning lack of
sensation or having
sensation blocked or
temporarily taken away.
 Often given to medical
patients to block pain
during procedures.

6. -Plegia
 Definition: paralysis or cessation of motion.
 Common words:
 Hemiplegia
 Paraplegia
 Quadriplegia

7. Quadraplegia
 One of the more
common words with the
–plegia suffix.
 Meaning the paralysis of
four.
 In the case of humans, it
means the paralysis of
four limbs.
 Often caused by an
injury or illness to the
cervical area of the
spinal cord.
