3. Nervous System Suffixes
The following are two suffixes mentioned in Chapter
12:
-esthesia
-plegia
5. Anesthesia
One of the more
recognizable words with
the suffix –esthesia.
Meaning lack of
sensation or having
sensation blocked or
temporarily taken away.
Often given to medical
patients to block pain
during procedures.
7. Quadraplegia
One of the more
common words with the
–plegia suffix.
Meaning the paralysis of
four.
In the case of humans, it
means the paralysis of
four limbs.
Often caused by an
injury or illness to the
cervical area of the
spinal cord.
