- WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH AS A ROCK STAR? WHAT PROBLEM WILL STAR STATUS SOLVE? Review and analyze “rock star” behaviors and dispositions with respect to best practices in online teaching and strategies for working remotely. Self-assess rock star potential with respect to best practices in online teaching and strategies for working remotely. Formulate a plan to develop and test 2 rock star strategies.
- ARE YOU READY FOR THE SPOTLIGHT? Every rock star starts by seeing someone somewhere and thinking “I want to do that.” Self assess motivation. Know thyself.
- WHERE DID YOU START YOUR ONLINE JOURNEY? Seek training. Use blended opportunities to acquire skill sets. Start with one skill at a time. Establish email and file naming protocols as you develop content.
- COUNTRY WESTERN, SWING OR HARD ROCK? None of us do this alone. Collaborate. Develop relationships with other faculty. Know what support systems are available to you (e.g. librarians can be your best friends). And double check that you are not a country western singer in a swing band!
- WHAT DO YOU DO TO GET READY….THE NIGHT BEFORE SCHOOL? That moment before a rock star takes the stage, when he or she takes a deep breath and sets oneself mentally. In my world, it means getting adequate rest and exercise and gearing up mentally for the class to start.
- Introduce yourself. Welcome activities. Pre-course correspondence. Survey in the first week to help get to know students.
- If you are a guitarist, don’t walk over to the piano. Use the right tools and don’t use too many tools at a time.
- Something people recognize and love. Use a quiz or scavenger hunt. Universal Design for Learning.
- Social and teaching presence. Facilitating discussion. Giving feedback. Respond to student questions efficiently.
- Billable hours. How do you add variety to a 16 week course? 8 week? Is there room for choice?
- Stay focused. Handle it once. Provide adequate transitions for students to string together content and make it relevant.
- Work smarter, not harder at grading.
- Build a community that wants to stay connected after class.
- Review what worked and didn’t work. Make changes before you forget! Questions?
